MARY Cox has stepped down from the South East Region committee, leaving in the role as chairperson having joined as secretary in 2006.

In her address at the SER’s recent annual general meeting, Mary spoke of the shows and training organised by the region in 2023, the Youth Development Squad programme and the Georgia Mulvihill trophy and bursary (won in 2023 by Kate Murphy).

In her address to those present, she recalled that time in 2006 when the region was down to nine active riders. James Rooney was then in the chair and he was followed by Anne Kirwan before Mary took up the role, relying on the committee to teach her what had to be done and how to do it.

“I would not have managed without them and their support,” said Cox. “We have expanded to 102 members... Now, however, after 18 years, it is time for me to step down and allow the region to grow with new people making decisions. It has been a great experience. I have met so many interesting and lovely people and had opportunities and experiences I never dreamt of. Thank you to everyone for your support over the years.”

The outgoing chairperson paid particular tribute to the current committee, her brother-in-law Stephen Cox (who used to do the show times and the desk) and her husband John “who has been supportive to me over the years and helped doing call-up and scoring.”

While a new chair has yet to be appointed, the current committee comprises Caitríona Ní Bhriain (secretary), Ivan Dowley (treasurer), Jillie Rogers, Anne Marie Dunphy, Ruth Daunt, Amy-Jo Peskens, Rita Naughton, Lynne Cassidy and Paula Moriarty.
