WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY?
Today is the second team and individual qualifier in the Olympic show jumping competition. It begins at 2pm Irish time.
WHAT DID I MISS?
A day of drama in the opening team and individual qualifier!
Guilherme Jorge’s course for round one of the Olympic challenge produced just 24 clear rounds and two disqualifications from the 75 starters. The Musical Instruments double and the water fence claimed more than their fair share of scalps and produced some unorthodox jumping from some combinations.
Penelope Leprevost (FRA) was unseated from the strongly-fancied Flora De Mariposa, Jur Vrieling (NED) was booed by the crowd and later disqualified for overuse of the whip when Zirocco Blue refused twice and Belgian rider Nicola Philippaerts was disqualified for overuse of his spurs when Zilverstar T was another to refuse at the Musical Instruments bogey double.

WHEN DOES GREG GO?
Greg Broderick and MHS Going Global will be third to go in this afternoon’s second individual qualifier, which starts at 2pm Irish time.
The competition will open with Portugal’s Luciana Diniz and Fit For Fun 13, followed by Rene Lopez and Con Dios III for Colombia and then the Irish combination.
There will be 69 riders competing in all today, some as individuals and some for their team only.

WHAT DOES GREG NEED TO DO TODAY?
Irish show jumping fans will be hoping for a clear round from Greg and MHS Going Global today to keep them in the hunt for a place in the individual final.
Only the top 45 riders from today’s competition will qualify for the third individual qualifier class tomorrow, Wednesday, August 17th, when the field will be reduced to just 35 for Friday’s final individual medal decider, where all competitors start on a zero score.
At the moment, Greg and MHS Going Global are in equal 53rd place. They are one of eight combinations who lie on eight faults at this stage.
Ahead of this group are one combination on seven faults, one on six faults, 24 riders on four faults and two on one time fault apiece.
The leading group at this stage are the combinations who still have a clean sheet – 24 horses and riders.
IS HE CONFIDENT?
Greg was in fighting form after the opening round, describing his eight faults as “very frustrating” because he felt MHS Going Global was jumping very well.
“There’s a couple of clear rounds in the horse without a doubt; we just have to get stuck in and make it happen,” he told Susan Finnerty of The Irish Field. “There’s no excuses, the horse is good enough to jump clear.”
