AUGUSTE Rodin lost out on an award in the Eclipse Award ceremony on Thursday in Florida.
The Derby and Breeders’ Cup winner had been in the final three in two categories, the turf horse and three-year-old colt. He lost out to the Belmont and Travers winner Arcangleo in the three-year-old category and to Up To The Mark in the turf category. He had beaten that horse in the Breeders’ Cup but three previous Grade 1 wins had swung the award to the Todd Pletcher-trained four-year-old.
Cody’s Wish was named Horse of the Year after he had already taken the champion older male in an emotionally charged moment at Thursday night’s ceremony. The five-year-old won his second Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile with a display of grit and class in his final career start last November at Santa Anita with his namesake Cody Dorman in attendance.
The victory was made more poignant when Dorman, who suffered from a rare genetic disorder, passed away the following day.
There was European success as Cheveley Park Stud’s Inspiral was named turf champion filly.
Godolphin’s Pretty Mischievous took the three-year-old filly division.
With eight wins to her name – Juddmonte’s Idiomatic was named outstanding older dirt female in North America.
Elite Power and Goodnight Olive repeated 2022 honours as Eclipse champion sprinters.
Predictably Breeders’ Cup-winning two-year-olds Fierceness and Just F Y I were named Eclipse champion two-year-old colt and filly, respectively.
Godolphin claimed its third consecutive title as leading owner, breeder and Bill Mott took the award for leading trainer.
Irad Ortiz Jr. won a fifth Eclipse as outstanding jockey. Ortiz Jr. set an earnings record at $39.1 million, winning a career-best 366 races.
