SHOLOKHOV passed away recently at the age of 25 at The Old Road Stud. He stood most of his career at Glenview Stud before moving to The Old Road Stud last year.

He will be remembered as the sire of several Grade 1 winners over hurdles and fences including Don Cossack, Shishkin and Bob Olinger.

Paul Cashman, owner of Glenview Stud, who purchased Sholokhov from Gestut Etzean in 2012, said: “He was a great addition to our National Hunt stallion roster. During his 12 years with us his progeny gave us some great days, particularly at Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown.”

Bred by Jim Bolger and trained by Aidan O’Brien, Sholokhov was a Group 1 winner over a mile at two. He was runner-up in both the Group 1 Irish Derby and the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes and, as a juvenile, was placed in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh.

He was sold by Coolmore to international owner Gary Tanaka and had one start for trainer Michael Jarvis before being retired. Sholokhov was purchased by Gestut Etzean to stand in Germany, where Don Cossack was bred.

Sholokhov (by Sadler’s Wells) is also the sire of high class jumpers Sounds Russian, Hiddenvalley Lake, Dell’ Arca, Kruzhlinin and Tullybeg. He is also grandsire of the dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs (by Timos).

On the flat his top performer was represented by dual Group 3 winner Peace Royale.
