A day of premium National Hunt foals delivered a significant boost in trade at Tattersalls Ireland on Tuesday, day three of the November National Hunt Sale.
A total of 14 foals made €50,000 or more on the day, and they were the progeny of seven stallions: Walk In The Park, Golden Horn, Poet's Word, Jukebox Jury, Diamond Boy, Blue Bresil and Harzand.
Pinhooker Richard Frisby was again to the fore during this session, spending €92,000 on a colt by Walk In The Park from Michael Moore's Ballincurrig House Stud.
The foal is out of En Vedette, a listed hurdle race winner in France and already the dam of blacktype performers Sabrina and Lady Adare.
Gerry Aherne of Coolmore, standing hidden in the gangway, tried to buy the colt but walked away after his €90,000 bid was bettered by the Frisby team, bidding from the balcony by the stairwell.
Agent Kevin Ross was also busy, paying €74,000 for the only Golden Horn colt in the sale and €72,000 for a filly by Poet's Word.
The Golden Horn colt was sold by Glen Stables for Kieran and Billy Kenneally, who sent their mare Mill Quest to be covered by the Prix de l'Arc winner last year.
Ross was buying on behalf of Ben Case for Lady Jayne Grosvenor. "The sire is doing well, the mare was a tough mare and she won nine times," said Ross. "He was one of our picks, a lovely type, a lovely mover. I think this is the first NH type by the sire we have bought."
The €72,000 Poet's Word filly was underbid by Joey Logan. Afterwards Anna Ross said: "We knew we'd have to go strong, and you have to go for the ones you want, and she is the best foal we have seen here.
"There is quite a good word about the sire, the trainers seem to be liking them. She is very well made, a lovely mover and she has a stunning pedigree – there is blacktype in every dam. She has been bought for Chris Jones's Killeen Glebe Farm and will be coming back for resale."
The filly's dam Ballyshannon Rose won a Grade 2 novice chase at Thurles.
Tuesday's session produced an average price of €22,595 and a median of €18,500.
The sale concludes on Wednesday with a further session of foals followed by approximately 40 broodmares and retired fillies.
