THE Derby Sale at Fairyhouse celebrates its 41st year in 2016 and is again scheduled for two days just before the end of June, with Part 2 of the sale on the third day.
As usual, all the 426 entries on the first two days (24 more than last year) are National Hunt stores, nearly all aged three years old, and the quality is exceptionally high.
Tattersalls Ireland again had plenty of winners at the 2016 Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National Meeting soon afterwards, including Cue Card and Rule The World. This year’s catalogue includes an own-brother to Champagne Fever, as well as half-brothers to Cue Card, Faugheen, Hurricane Fly, Kicking King and Big Buck’s.
Although nearly all the 426 entries on the Wednesday and Thursday are geldings, almost 20% of the catalogue are fillies, and among those fillies are some of the best pedigrees, including half-sisters to Punjabi, Binocular and Thunder And Roses.
Many of the leading NH stallions are among the sires, including Presenting (26), Beneficial (31), Flemensfirth (43), Court Cave (27), Gold Well (26), Oscar (23), Milan (30), Scorpion (19) and Stowaway (34).
All lots bought at the Derby Sale will be eligible for the €100,000 Tattersalls Ireland George Mernagh Memorial Sales Bumper, to be run at the Fairyhouse Easter Festival in 2017, and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing will contribute to the cost of flights for overseas buyers at this auction.
