A WELL-BRED breeding prospect offered by Kiltinan Castle Stud topped the Tattersalls Online January Sale at 49,000gns. Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown provided the highest bid for Gleaming Crown, an unraced three-year-old filly by Wootton Bassett, out of the listed-winning Galileo mare Dazzling.
Blandford Bloodstock bought Dazzling herself as a yearling for 925,000gns on behalf of Coolmore partners, and she went on to place in two Group 3s, as well as gaining a stakes win. Resold for 300,000gns last month, the own-sister to dual Group 1 winner Roderic O’Connor is the dam of a graded performer in the US.
As was the case with the Tattersalls Online December Sale, the top three highest-priced lots failed to find a buyer by the time bidding closed. The breeding right to Havana Grey, which was the expected highlight, went unsold at 235,000gns, while the breeding right to Kameko was retained at 80,000gns.
King Chaos, who won a novice stakes at Southwell last month by five lengths, was bought back for 88,000gns. The four-year-old Kingman gelding was offered with a rating of 81 and had been bought by Rebecca Menzies from Karl Burke at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale for 38,000gns.
Rival turns stablemate
The highest-priced horse in training in the January Sale was Scotcantou, who joins Henry de Bromhead at a cost of 36,000gns. Eoin McCarthy offered the son of Shantou on behalf of owner John Moylan, having trained the bay to win an auction maiden hurdle at Galway in October.
De Bromhead would be very familiar with the form, having trained the runner-up that day, Downmexicoway. He progressed to win a maiden hurdle at Down Royal on St Stephen’s Day by 10 lengths, while the third horse finished second on his next two starts.
Denis Hogan was another Irish trainer to sell his offering, with Conor McGlone giving 21,000gns for the multiple-placed maiden Dahab. The Joseph O’Brien-trained Boldog, a bumper and maiden hurdle winner who finished second in a beginners chase on his last start, sold to Dan Astbury and American Dreamers for 12,000gns.
Two of Noel Meade’s three offerings found a buyer, the highest price being the 11,500gns paid by Ash Hill House for Van Demon.
Bargain buys
Strawberry Fledge, an unraced own-sister to Cloth Of Stars, provided Jack Cantillon with a quick return on the €14,000 he paid for the well-related chesnut at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale. Ballynure Park Stud resold the now three-year-old to CV Racing for 20,000gns.
Killartery Stud’s acquisition of Hells Babe may appear good value in the future, having paid just 1,000gns for the Alne Park Stud-consigned 12-year-old. Her best produce is a 68-rated novice stakes winner, but she has a three-year-old Oasis Dream filly to run, and a Golden Horn yearling waiting in the wings.
More notably, the Hellvelyn mare was talented herself, having earned a rating of 98 after finishing third in the Group 3 Fairy Bridge Stakes.
She finished half a length behind Skitter Skatter, in what was a season-best three-year-old run for a filly better known as a top-class juvenile.
In total, 49 lots sold for an average of 7,580gns, realising a turnover of 371,400gns. Over 270 bidders registered for the sale, hailing from over 20 countries, from America to Zambia.
