THERE are 546 entries for the substantial Goffs February Mixed Sale although this total is about 50 more than last year. However, it has been possible for Goffs to maintain the size of this auction at only two days, on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 4th and 5th.
The February Sale offers buyers a really comprehensive choice, as it is a genuine mixture, with high quality flat race bloodstock mixed in with stoutly bred National Hunt hopefuls. The first day, the Tuesday, starts the sale with 277 yearlings, mainly for the flat, but also some National Hunt.
Then the Wednesday is given over to two-year-olds, horses in training and breeding stock, comprising about 150 broodmares and fillies out of training. There are also two stallion prospects - Group 1 star Verbal Dexterity (Lot 545) and News Anchor (Lot 546).
Peniaphobia and Make Believe are just two recent Group 1 winners whose dams were bought at the February Sale, while other horses who have changed hands at this sale in recent years include Obviously, twice winner of the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile in the USA, who cost only €2,000, while the dam of champion two-year-old Toormore was sold here for just €7,000.
