GORDON Elliott will train Pete So High, the three-year-old son of High Chaparral who topped the one-day Goffs UK September Horses In Training Sale on Wednesday. The German-bred gelding won twice over a mile and a half after the catalogue was printed, bring his record to four wins and eight places on 14 starts.

Aidan O’Ryan acted for Elliott and his bid of £66,000 proved decisive after the agent saw off Hamish Macauley for the Richard Hannon-trained, Middleham Park Racing-owned lot. Earlier in the day O’Ryan’s father Bobby secured Yug, another three-year-old gelding, for £56,000. The son of Motivator was placed over an extended mile and a half at Leopardstown on his second outing for John Oxx and will now be trained by James Nash. O’Ryan senior was with Hanshen Tham.

Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown House Stud was the leading consignor, selling 24 lots for £329,000 and at an average of £13,708. By some distance the best of their draft was Marinero, a point-to-point winner who went on to be successful five times in a bumper, over hurdles and fences. The eight-year-old son of the recently deceased Presenting was latterly trained by Henry de Bromhead.

Highflyer Bloodstock’s Tessa Greatrex was busy at the sale and two of her principal purchases were from Irish yards. She paid £42,000 for the Joseph O’Brien-trained Spin A Yarn, a four-year-old son of Flemensfirth who won over hurdles at Ballinrobe and was runner-up at Tramore on his most recent outings. Minutes later she added the listed hurdle winner Dicosimo to her shopping list at £28,000. The Willie Mullins-trained six-year-old Laveron gelding raced for Susannah Ricci. Both geldings will be trained by Warren Greatrex.

Runner-up on his latest start at Redcar, the maiden three-year-old Broadway Dreams sold to Wiltshire trainer Michael Blake for £40,000 and this was a nice profit for owner Craig Buckingham who gave just £8,000 for hi in March as an unraced youngster sold by Godolphin. The son of Oasis Dream is the first runner for his dam Rosa Eglanteria who was second in a Group 1 race at two in Italy.

Ingleby Mackenzie, a three-year-old gelded son of Sixties Icon, won over 12 furlongs at Doncaster in July for Mick Channon and he sold to Ashgrove Stables for £32,000. This was moments before Simon Munir and Isaac Souede received £28,000 for the French listed hurdle winner Jeannot De Nonant, a five-year-old gelding by Full Of Gold. He was purchased by PBR Abrasives (Wolverhampton) Ltd. Later in the session that £28,000 price was matched when the William Knight Racing consigned Southdown Lad, a winner three times from six to 12 furlongs, sold to Blandford Bloodstock, and the son of Lilbourne Lad will continue his career in Greece.

Tony Williams, the managing director of Goffs UK, commented afterwards: “We were well supported with some big drafts from the likes of Gigginstown House Stud, Godolphin, and Middleham Park Racing, and we attracted a large buying bench from throughout Europe, the Middle East and Australasia which translated into a solid day in the ring. The clearance rate of 85% demonstrated the healthy demand for horses today and it’s pleasing to see growth in the sale’s statistics, with the average and median both showing significant increases on last year.”
