SEVEN lots at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale in 2018 brought a million guineas or more, headed by Pearling for 2,400,000gns and Bound at 2,200,000gns. This time a single lot sold for a seven-figure sum.

Stowell Hill Stud’s Coplow sold to MV Magnier, his sole purchase of the week, for 2,100,000gns and after the sale Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony paid tribute to the vendor and the achievement. He said: “The obvious highlight of the week was the sale of Jeanette McCreery’s outstanding broodmare Coplow. Jeanette and her late husband Bob have achieved so much success over the years and the sale of Coplow was a magnificent tribute to their years of commitment to our industry.”

Coplow is the dam of the 2019 Group 1 1000 Guineas and Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes winner Billesdon Brook and was sold in foal to Kingman. She was bought on one bid by Magnier.

He said: “She is in foal to a hot stallion. I imagine she will go to Galileo but I will have to speak with the lads.”

Jeanette McCreery said: “We have so many members of the family that something had to be sold to keep it all running. It is a great credit to Bob, but credit to the Hannons who have made this family.”

Coplow’s listed-winning daughter Billesdon Bess sold last year for 800,000gns, her two-year-old Sepoy filly Bruisa is in training with Richard Hannon, while her Dubawi colt foal is being retained.

Wild card entry Big Brothers Pride came agonisingly close to being a million guinea sale, but BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly had the winning bid at 975,000gns. Tweenhills sold the Group 3 winning daughter of Invincible Spirit who is a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Polydream.

“She is for a US buyer and goes to America,” said Reilly. “She won’t race on and will be syndicated to breed. She is from bloodlines that rarely come onto the market.”
