WITH 24 lots fetching sale prices in six-figures by the close of business on Thursday evening, just 10 of them were sold by entities other than Godolphin.

The 10 million guinea mark was already passed and a new record set of figures beckoned with a day to go. The horses-in-training sold on the second day saw an incredible clearance rate of 96%, a mere eight of the 179 lots on offer failing to find a new owner.

The sale of the Godolphin lots is dealt with separately. A draft of 56 lots sold by Shadwell brought more than a million guineas, but interestingly the best priced of their consignment sold for 62,000gns.

Voute Sales acted as agent for the sale of the Galileo five-year-old What Say You, a two-year-old winner for Karl Burke having been purchased as a yearling for 90,000gns. With a first cover by Lope De Vega, she sold this time for 270,000gns to Andrew Williams, an Australian bloodstock agent.

Entries from Juddmonte Farms are always a crowd puller but just a single lot among their offerings on Thursday reached the upper echelons of trade. This was the winning Dubawi three-year-old colt Jewel House and he comes from the immediate family of Powerscourt and Frankel. Qatari interest was high in the colt and the hammer fell at 215,000gns in favour of owner Abdulatif Hussain Al-Emadi, who hopes the colt will win the Qatar Derby.

Another horse with current form to make his mark was 2017 Naas winner Gino Severini, a late entry to the sale. The ultra-consistent son of Fastnet Rock was a 58,000gns yearling buy, but victory saw his value soar to 200,000gns. He was knocked down to Frederico Barberini who was acting for Asian Bloodstock. The colt will continue his career in Hong Kong.

Baroda and Colbinstown Studs offered an attractive package in the shape of the Intense Focus mare Craic Agus Spraoi, sold in foal to Lope De Vega and with a colt foal at her side by Teofilo. Unsold in the ring, a private deal was later concluded, with Geoff Turnbull of Elwick Stud paying 175,000gns for the half-sister to the Dewhurst Stakes winner Parish Hall. Turnbull races the globetrotter Mondialiste.

Bill Dwan’s The Castlebridge Consignment had three of their lots sell for six-figures. Best of them was the first mare in foal to New Bay to be auctioned. This was the winning four-year-old Elltaaf, a daughter of Invincible Spirit who was bought from Godolphin in February 2016 for 45,000gns and won subsequently for Ennistown Stud and trainer Paddy Twomey. BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly bought her for 160,000gns this time for Gerrardstown Stud.

Champion Qatari trainer Jassim Ghazali was busy and his most prominent purchase was the Dark Angel three-year-old Vona. She won a single race but it was a listed event at York and this filly from the family of Rail Link and Linda’s Lad has both racing and breeding appeal. She cost Ghazali 140,000gns and was sold from Richard Fahey’s yard.

Presumed to be heading to Camas Park Stud, though signed for by BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly, is the eight-time winner and stakes-placed Footstepsinthesand five-year-old Volunteer Point. Sold from Mick Channon’s yard, but with an attractive April covering by Kodiac, she won more than £210,000 in her career.

A five-year-old son of Kodiac, the Clive Cox-trained Laidback Romeo sold to John and Jake Warren for 115,000gns. He may make a start or two in Britain before transferring to Bahrain where he should be able to make an impact.

Hugo Palmer sent another five-time winner, the Rock Of Gibraltar four-year-old Baydar, to the sale and welcomed him back to the yard in different ownership after Richard Knight’s bid of 110,000gns won the day.

Baydar was sold by The Castlebridge Consignment and later in Thursday’s session they parted with the winning Invincible Spirit three-year-old gelding Via Serendipity on behalf of trainer Hugo Palmer, for 100,000gns. Liam Norris and William Huntingdon revealed that the gelding will now race from Stuart Williams’ Newmarket yard.
