OPTIMAL hydration is recognised as a key factor in equine performance, and is dependent upon adequate water intake. Reduced water intake can impair digestion in horses and lead to impaction colic- a leading cause of equine mortality worldwide.

Many horse owners avail of automatic drinker systems as they offer time and labour-saving benefits over buckets, but they typically do not allow users to remotely review whether their horse has been drinking or not, how much they have been drinking, and how frequently.

HYDRASURE

Emer Cooney is a biologist and horse riding instructor with over 20 years’ experience in the equine industry. Emer recognised the need for modern and efficient solutions to help veterinarians, horse owners and trainers keep track of their horse’s water intake. Emer’s understanding of equine health, zoology and freshwater quality standards helped her establish and develop HydraSure.

HydraSure (patent-pending) is a standalone drinking system that helps users to track their horse’s water intake.

It will provide users with time-stamped information about their horses’ water intake, as well as information on the amount of water it took to refill the drinker, with daily totals provided of the amount of water consumed over each 24 hour period.

The new automatic drinker is corner mounted, with a larger bowl that allows horses to take a longer drink. This drinker also features a quick-release drain which makes it easier to empty and clean than existing models of drinkers.

Hydrasure stores and uploads historic data to help owners ascertain what their horse’s normal water consumption is at the drinker, and provides graphical output to highlight trends and patterns in drinking behaviour over time. A retrofit unit is also available to horse owners who want to continue using their existing water drinkers.
