IS there a chance that we saw a classic winner recently make her debut at Dundalk?

It may be stretching the imagination at this stage to think that Love Potion is that filly, but she does hold a classic entry in the Irish Oaks and she did win her first start well.

Making her debut over a mile, the JP McManus-owned winner is trained by David Wachman and was bred by JP’s daughter Sue Ann. She is a daughter of Galileo and the fourth foal, all by the multiple champion stallion, out of the Pivotal mare Potion. The dam was purchased as a yearling for 230,000gns by another McManus family member Kieran and sent to be trained by David Wachman for whom she won twice.

The previous winners out of Potion are Mad For Road, An Fear Ciuin and Boherbuoy, while the loyalty to Galileo continues and she has a yearling filly by him too. Potion is one of six foals bred by the Zafonic mare Motion, but the only one born in Europe. After foaling Potion she was exported to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where she bred three winners.

It was somewhat surprising that she was exported as she is a full-sister to the brilliant two-year-old Xaar who won both the Dewhurst Stakes and the Prix de la Salamandre and as a sire got the Rathbarry stallion Xtension and the smart Balthazaar’s Gift. Xaar and the Grand Criterium runner-up Masterclass were the best of the 14 winners from Monroe, a group winner for Vincent O’Brien and second in the Phoenix Stakes.

Two daughters of Monroe in particular are worthy of mention here. The Diesis mare Diese was a Group 3 winner in France and her nine winners were headed by Senure, a multiple Grade 1 winner in America and sire.

The Danzig mare Didicoy was stakes-placed and the best of her eight winners was a Grade 2 winner by Nashwan in America. Named Didina she is the grandam of two young sires standing in England – Cityscape at Overbury Stud and Bated Breath at Juddmonte.
