BRED in Britain by Italians, Lady Bowthorpe won a thrilling renewal of the Group 1 Nassau Stakes on Thursday afternoon at Goodwood, adding to previous wins in the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket and the Group 3 Valiant stakes at Ascot. Her placed efforts included finishing runner-up to Palace Pier in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes.
Her earnings this week pushed past £550,000 from five wins, and huge congratulations to music impresario Emma Banks for keeping the daughter of Nathaniel (Galileo) in training at five. This win means she becomes the fourth Group 1 winning daughter of her Newsells Park Stud sire, still awaiting his first top level winning son.
Trained by William Jarvis, Lady Bowthorpe was bred by Paolo and Emma Agostini’s Scuderia Archi Romani at Sara and Luca Cumani’s Fittocks Stud just outside Newmarket. This is where her dam Maglietta Fina (Verglas) has spent her whole broodmare career. She is also dam of the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes winner, and Group 1-placed, Speak In Colours (Excelebration), and the four-time winner and stakes-placed Pretty In Grey (Brazen Beau) who is in training with Marco Botti.
Winner of five races, four of them in Italy, Maglietta Fina has a two-year-old colt called Master Of Colours (Muhaarar) who the Agostinis have retained, and she also has a Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) filly foal. She is in foal to Kingman (Invincible Spirit).
Lady Bowthorpe was sold through agent John Troy to James Toller at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 for 82,000gns. Her worth as a broodmare prospect has soared again this week.
Thrilled
On Thursday Sara Cumani said: “We are thrilled for the Agostinis, who own the mare, for William Jarvis, for Kieran Shoemark [first Group 1 as a jockey] and for Emma Banks; we are thrilled for everybody. The world is her oyster now; she will have plenty of opportunities.
“They’ve [Agostinis] been with us for a long time now. They were owners of ours for many, many years. They have been very successful. They are only small-time breeders with a few mares and have mostly bred sprinters. They have always gone to cheaper stallions, yet still had so much success. The mare has two blacktype horses in Speak In Colours and Lady Bowthorpe. She also has a filly called Pretty In Grey who has got small blacktype and I think has the ability to improve on that.”
Close relation
Maglietta Fina has four winning siblings, the standout being Tullius (Le Vie Dei Colori). He won 11 times, notably in the Group 2 bet365 Mile at Sandown and the Group 2 York Stakes at the track of the same name.
Like Lady Bowthorpe, he too ran second in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes. Their dam Whipped Cream (Kingmambo) won twice, but this was nothing compared to her dam, and Lady Bowthorpe’s third dam, Meringue Pie (Silent Screen).
Though none of them were graded races, five of her 14 wins were in stakes races. She was also a prolific winner producer, her 10 successful offspring included three stakes winners. Meringue Pie was the best runner from Bavarian Cream (Nashua), a stakes-placed winner of seven races.
