FASTNET Rock reached a milestone as a stallion at the weekend when his five-year-old son Desert Stone won the Grade 2 San Gabrial Stakes at Santa Anita. This was the sire’s 100th group or graded stakes winner and his 155th worldwide stakes winner.
A 280,000gns yearling purchase at Tattersalls when he was sold through Clare Castle Stud, the Arkle Bloodstock-bred entire was gaining his first stakes win, though he has also been Grade 1-placed. A full-brother to Group 3 winner Euginio (Fastnet Rock), Desert Stone is also a half-brother to stakes winner Handassa (Dubawi). These three stakes winners are out of the unraced Starstone (Diktat) who is a full-sister to a pair of Group 1 winning siblings.
They are the full-brothers Pastoral Pursuits (Bahamian Bounty) and Goodricke. Both were champion sprinters and the former won the Group 1 July Cup among six career successes. The now 19-year-old has been a prolific sire of winners, his progeny winning more than 700 races, and he is still active.
Goodricke won five times, his biggest moment being victory in the Group 1 Haydock sprint Cup.
