ONE Man Band collected a tidy sum of $600,000 for his victory in the Group 2 Godolphin Mile on Dubai World Cup night recently. The Irish-bred son of Pivotal defeated another son of the same sire to land the spoils.
This was the eighth career win in 15 starts for One Man Band and he was the first winner on World Cup night for trainer Doug Watson. John Ferguson paid €95,000 for One Man Band as a foal at the Goffs November Sale in 2011 when he was sold from Mount Coote Stud on behalf of breeder Richard Pegum.
One Man Band is the best winner to date from the high-class Cape Cross mare Musicanna, a listed winner who was placed in a pair of Group 1 races, the Falmouth Stakes and the Sun Chariot Stakes, both run at Newmarket. This is a family that is equally at home producing winners at the highest level over sprint and staying distances.
Musicanna herself is the best offspring of Upend, a daughter of Main Reef who won the St Simon Stakes at Newbury and the Galtres Stakes at York. All her 17 foals made it to the racecourse, a remarkable achievement in itself, and 10 of them won.
Her daughters are also responsible for such diverse performers as the champion sprinter Overdose, affectionately known as the Hungarian Bullet, and Contraband, winner of the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham.
He is not the only Cheltenham Festival winner in the immediate family. Upend is a half-sister to the dam of Royal Gait, a hugely talented runner who won both the Group 1 Prix du Cadran and the Prix Royal Oak, and then added the Champion Hurdle at Prestbury Park to his impressive but curtailed race record.
