MOON Over Germany was an interesting winner for Eddie Harty at Navan, landing a maiden hurdle in the familiar colours of Philip Reynolds.
The son of Germany is out of a Moonax half-sister to Captain Cee Bee, a Cheltenham Festival winner for Harty and the second best son of Germany. The honour of being the best is the property of Faugheen. There is plenty on paper to suggest Moon Over Germany can go on to better things.
The dam of Moon Over Germany, Elea Moon, was tried in a point-to-point but she always had a residual value as a broodmare and her first foal and runner is now a winner. Her second foal is a three-year-old filly by Beneficial. Her own dam Elea Victoria never ran but that mare’s other three foals did and two of them won. The third, the placed Drumbug, is also the dam of a winner with her first foal and Timmy Hillman bought her Jeremy yearling gelding for €20,000 in November.
Captain Cee Bee won some £415,000 with his 13 career wins and he was a Grade 1 winner over hurdles and over fences. The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle was his outstanding raceday, while his win at the highest level over fences came at Punchestown in the Ryanair Novices’ Chase. He was third in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.
Further back in the pedigree you will find a top-class German female line. Elea, the third dam of Moon Over Germany, bred 11 winners.
One of the best of these on the flat was the German St Leger winner El Tango, while over jumps she produced El Dancer who is a Grade 2 winner over hurdles for Lucy Wadham. Elea was one of only two of her dam’s 12 foals not to win.
