STELA Star is the latest in a long list of high-class winners bred by Vimal and Gillian Khosla, but while they are accustomed to receiving seven-figure sums for stock at Goffs, this latest Group 3-winning juvenile was a relative bargain buy at €23,000.

Trained by Tom Mullins for his wife Helen, Stela Star won the Killavullen Stakes at Leopardstown and has now earned twice what she cost as a yearling. She is the first foal from the unraced Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) mare Compostela who was purchased carrying this group winner for 72,000gns in 2016. This year’s yearling filly by Kodiac (Danehill) was bought at the Arqana August Sale by Oliver St Lawrence for €75,000, while on the ground is a filly foal by Zoffany (Dansili).

Stela Star brings to 11 the number of stakes winners sired by Epaulette (Commands). That list is headed by the triple Group 1 winner Soqrat. Stela Star is one of three European-foaled stakes winners by the sire who spent four seasons at Kildangan Stud and one in Dalham Hall.

The family of Stela Star is improving by the week and Compostela’s half-sister One Master (Fastnet Rock) almost made it a weekend not to be forgotten when finishing runner-up in the Group 1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes, a fortnight after winning the Group 1 Qatar Prix de la Foret for the second time.
