ONE of the speediest sons of Dansili, Bated Breath won the Group 2 Temple Stakes in a new course record time and was second in four Group 1 sprints. A half-brother to champion miler Cityscape, this very handsome bay has made an excellent start to his stud career. At Royal Ascot in 2019 he sired three individual winners. A Bated Breath foal fetched 185,000gns at Newmarket last December.
His daughter Daahyeh added the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes to her Albany Stakes success and she was then second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. Space Traveller won the Group 2 Solonaway Stakes at Leopardstown as well as the Jersey Stakes, while Biometric’s Ascot win was in the Britannia Stakes.
Two more Group 2 stars for Bated Breath are Worth Waiting (Dahlia Stakes) and Beckford in the Railway Stakes, as well as seconds in two Group 1 events, and altogether Bated Breath has sired 29 stakes winners.
Unraced as a two-year-old, Bated Breath won his first three starts in 2010.
The next year he won two of his first three races, the Listed Leisure Stakes at Windsor and a victory over Society Rock at Haydock.
He was a close second to champion Dream Ahead in the July Cup at Newmarket and the Sprint Cup at Haydock, both Group 1 events, before a trip to Woodbine in Canada to finish second in the Grade 1 Nearctic Stakes. Timeform rated him on 125 that season.
On his reappearance as a five-year-old, Bated Breath broke the Haydock record for five furlongs when winning the Group 2 Temple Stakes in 56.39 seconds. At Royal Ascot he was a close second in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes, and on his final appearance he was third in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock.
Bated Breath is a half-brother to champion miler Cityscape whose wins included the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Meydan. Their dam Tantina, a daughter of Distant View, scored in the Listed Oak Tree Stakes and Sceptre Stakes, and she is out of Didina who won the Grade 2 Dahlia Handicap at Hollywood Park.
Monroe, the fourth dam of Bated Breath, was dam of dual European champion Xaar; she was also a half-sister to the dam of El Gran Senor and Try My Best.
