THE high-class sprinter Elzaam has already proved his quality as a stallion with his first four crops, which have included some 70 individual winners of over 190 races and about £3,000,000.
Among those are Waitingfortheday who scored in the Group 3 Fairy Bridge Stakes, Clem Fandango who is a listed victress and placed in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes and Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes, and Irish listed winner Playa Del Puente, as well as five other blacktype performers. Elzaam’s stock have fetched six -figure prices at Newmarket and Doncaster.
Although foaled in Australia, Elzaam did all his racing in England. Trained firstly by Michael Jarvis and then by Roger Varian, he was a high-class performer over sprint distances, only a nose away from being a Royal Ascot winning two-year-old.
His international pedigree is particularly appealing, as he is a strong, compact good-looking son of the outstanding Australian stallion Redoute’s Choice out of a winning Kingmambo mare from a top American family.
A €280,000 yearling at Deauville, Elzaam scored first time out at York in May 2010, then was beaten just a nose in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot by Strong Suit, with Zoffany behind him. Going on to Newmarket for the Group 2 July Stakes, Elzaam was third, with Gimcrack Stakes hero Approve in arrears. Never out of the first three that season, Elzaam ended with a close third to Klammer in the Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury.
Early in 2011 Elzaam ran away with the Listed Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury, romping home six lengths clear. At Royal Ascot he was a close fourth in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes to Society Rock, ahead of Bated Breath. After that, Elzaam was close up in the Group 1 Darley July Cup and the Group 1 Betfred Sprint Cup, both won by Dream Ahead, with behind him such stars as Society Rock, Sole Power and Wootton Bassett.
Redoute’s Choice, the sire of Elzaam, was the champion three-year-old miler in Australia and this son of Danehill has sired 167 stakes winners, including 33 individual Group 1 stars, and has twice been champion sire in Australia.
Elzaam’s dam was bred in the USA and has produced eight winners, including his group winning own-brother Ravi. She is a half-sister to Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes winner Point Ashley.
The fourth dam Hurry Harriet won the Champion Stakes at Newmarket and the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh for trainer Paddy Mullins.
