THERE are many boxes ticked when it comes to assessing the stallion credentials of Mutasaabeq, a new member of the stallion roster at the National Stud in England. The Shadwell homebred is by a sire of sires, a son of a classic-winning dam, and a high-class performer over a mile. His female family is also noted for producing sires.

Hopefully there will be no confusion in the years ahead, as Shadwell named another colt, also born in 2018, Mutasaabeq. The one who starts his career at stud in England was born in the same country, while the US-born edition is a son of Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday), and that Grade 2 juvenile winner and Grade 1-placed sire is having his second season at stud in Florida.

Mutasaabeq (GB) was sent into training with Charlie Hills and won his only start at two over seven furlongs at Newmarket. On his three-year-old debut he was back at the same venue and over the same trip, and was an impressive six-length winner of a conditions race. Still relatively inexperienced, he was less than six lengths behind Poetic Flare in the Group 1 2000 Guineas. After a run at Royal Ascot, he got back to winning ways at Haydock.

At four, Mutasaabeq proved to be very consistent, winning twice and in the money on all his other starts. He won the Group 2 Joel Stakes over a mile at Newmarket, a race he was to win for a second time the next season. He found just one too good in both the Group 2 Summer Mile at Ascot and the Sandown Mile, and ran third in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes. Two more victories at five saw him go one better in the Group 2 Sandown Mile, this time at the expense of Native Trail.

Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) has not only been an outstanding sire during his lifetime spent at the Irish National Stud, but his sons are among the most highly-prized stallions around the world. He has an impressive list of sons who have become Group and Grade 1 sires, and among those who have sired multiple top-level winners are Kingman, I Am Invincible and Lawman.

No less impressive in the case of Mutasaabeq is his female pedigree. He is one of a pair of pattern winners out of Ghanaati, a daughter of Giant’s Causeway (Storm Cat). She won half of her six starts, notably the Group 1 1000 Guineas and Group 1 Coronation Stakes, and she placed in a pair of such races, the Sun Chariot Stakes and Sussex Stakes.

Ghanaati is the best and one of seven winners out of the dual listed winner Sarayir (Mr Prospector), and they also include pattern winner and Group 1-placed Mawaatheeq (Danzig) and the listed winner and Group 1 Oaks-placed Rumoush (Rahy). Daughters of Sarayir have produced 10 stakes winners to date, while further removes of the family are responsible for such as Nashwan (Blushing Groom), Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) and Baaeed (Sea The Stars).
