ARDAD made a bright start at stud when the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes victor sired the Group 1 Prix Morny and Group 1 Middle Park Stakes star Perfect Power in his first crop. He went on to add the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup the following season and now stands as part of the Darley roster of stallions.
Coulsty, a Group 3-winning sprinter, struck with the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes heroine Shantisara, while the Group 2-winning miler Kodi Bear supplied Group 1 Oaks runner-up Mystery Angel and leading sprint juvenile Go Bears Go among others of note. Now based in India, Prince Of Lir sired last year’s Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes winner.
These are among the earliest sons of Kodiac (Danehill) to go to stud, so it is fair to say that the half-brother to Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) has made a good start as a sire of stallions.
Group 1-winner Hello Youmzain will have his first crop of 113 two-year-olds to represent him this season, and Tally-Ho Stud launches Group 1 Prix Jean Prat winner on his second career, standing alongside his sire.
Juvenile record
Given his juvenile record, and how sons of Kodiac are doing as stallions, it would be no surprise at all should thw Irish National Stud team member Nando Parrado become a Group 1 sire. He will have plenty to represent him, covering some 220 mares in his first two seasons.
With the start of the 2020 racing season compressed due to Covid-19 lockdowns, the rush to meet one-off qualification requirements to get a run in Royal Ascot’s juvenile races made it likely there could be some surprise results that would look anything but as the months unfolded.
Nando Parrado finished fifth in a Newmarket maiden just 16 days before Ascot and put himself into the history books with a record 150/1 victory in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes.
He proved that was no fluke when finishing a two-length runner-up to the champion Campanelle in the Group 1 Prix Morny on soft ground at Deauville next time out, and again when chasing home Sealiway in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on heavy at ParisLongchamp.
Sealiway went on to be a classic-placed Arc fifth before landing the Group 1 Champion Stakes, whereas the colt who finished a three-quarter-length third was none other than the Ken Condon-trained subsequent Group 1 Prix Jean Prat winner Laws Of Indices.
Nando Parrado finished fourth to Chindit in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes on his reappearance at three and filled the same position behind Mostahdaf in a mile listed contest next time at Sandown. There will be plenty of his offspring who do well at that trip, in addition to the inevitable sprinters.
Group 1 winners
A half-brother to the blacktype-placed pair of Dubai Horizon (Poet’s Voice) and Muntadeb (Invincible Spirit), Nando Parrado is out of the Group 1-placed Argentine pattern winner Chibola, a mare by multiple champion sire Roy (Fappiano). She is a full-sister to juvenile sprint Group 1-scorer Chollo and you will find more Argentine Group 1-winners under her grandam.
