THE handsome grey champion sprinter Lethal Force has inherited his coat colour from his sire Dark Angel, whose other Group 1 stars include such speed merchants as the July Cup hero Harry Angel, the Prix de l’Abbaye winner Battaash and the flying filly Mecca’s Angel, twice successful in the Nunthorpe Stakes. There is also plenty of speed in his pedigree on his dam’s side, as she is a half-sister to Flanders, the listed winning dam of champion sprinter G Force and the grandam of champion filly Flotilla, a Group 1 winner in France and a Breeders’ Cup heroine in the USA.
Lethal Force has made a brilliant start at Cheveley Park, as he has had 27 individual winners from his first crop which raced as two-year-olds in 2017, including Would Be King, Lethal Steps and Mokaatil, all stakes placed. He was one of the top two first crop sires by number of winners.
Not surprisingly his stock were very popular at the 2017 sales, with his yearlings averaging almost €30,000 and with a highest price of 115,000gns for a colt at Newmarket, while his foals fetched up to 60,000gns. Mocklershill sold one of his sons for 170,000gns at the Newmarket Guineas Breeze-Up.
Never out of the first four as a two-year-old, Lethal Force was twice group-placed that season, in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and Group 2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Goodwood. After winning by nine lengths over five furlongs at Bath first time out in 2012, he led all the way to score in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury, beating Strong Suit. That season he was also blacktype placed four times, including the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster and the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot,
Dropping back to only six furlongs as a four-year-old, Lethal Force was the champion older sprinter in Europe that season and was rated on 128 by Timeform’s Racehorses of 2013. He defeated Society Rock in both the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot (leading all the way to win by two lengths) and the Darley July Cup at Newmarket, which he won by a length and a half in record time, with Slade Power and Sole Power both behind him. He was also second to Moonlight Cloud in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville and to Society Rock in the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes at York.
