ONE of the top dozen third crop sires in Europe in 2020, Gregorian that season had 26 individual winners from 57 runners, who scored 39 wins and amassed almost €500,000 in prize money.
In his three seasons with runners he has sired the winners of 112 races and over £1,400,000, so at Rathasker Stud he is very much following in the footsteps of his very successful sire Clodovil who now has 25 blacktype winners to his credit.
So far the best of Gregorian’s offspring is Plainchant, whose wins include the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte and the Group 3 Prix Eclipse, while his daughter Queen Jo Jo scored in the Group 3 Summer Stakes at York and he is also the sire of two listed winners in Italy and Turkey, while eight other sons or daughters have been stakes placed.
Gregorian was himself a very talented miler who won six races and was placed nine times in his four seasons in training with John Gosden. After scoring at Doncaster as a two-year-old, he won twice more the next season, when he was also second in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly and third in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
As a four-year-old Gregorian carried off the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury and the Group 3 Diomed Stakes at Epsom, as well as finishing third to Declaration Of War in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
In his final season he won the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket and was third in the Group 1 Darley July Cup, increasing his earnings to £434,914.
Gregorian’s sire Clodovil won the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains-French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp and this son of Danehill is sire of Group 1 winners in three countries, with Nahoodh scoring in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, while Tiger Tanaka won the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp last year and Moriarty has five group successes in Australia. Clodovil has sired over 340 winners of more than 1,150 races.
Three Days In May, the dam of Gregorian, is a winning daughter of the speedy Cadeaux Genereux and she has bred three other winners, including Naval Warfare, a listed scorer in Australia and third in the Adelaide Cup, and Manderley, fourth in the 1000 Guineas.
She is a half-sister to eight winners, among them the Irish listed winner Balmont Mast, who was second in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen Stakes in Dubai, and Crazee Mental, second in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes and dam of Doncaster Group 2 star Premio Loco.
