THE Irish National Stud is renowned for providing world-class training for young people interested in a career in the thoroughbred industry.
This year it will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the thoroughbred breeding management programme. Graduates of the programme can be found all across the globe and include high-profile names in the industry such as Robert Hall, Henry Beeby, Joe Osborne, Con Marnane, Willie McCreery, Peter Moloney, Bill Dwan and Maxine O’Sullivan.
The six-month residential programme which commences in January each year is designed to provide students with a hands-on practical approach to the thoroughbred breeding industry.
The practical aspects of this unique programme are demonstrated as learners rotate around the various divisions of the stud farm on a weekly basis, gaining knowledge and practical skills. Learners attend evening lectures given by those involved in the bloodstock industry including veterinarians, equine reproduction specialists, equine nutritionists, farriers, racehorse trainers, bloodstock agents and racecourse managers and cover a variety of topics from farm management to business administration.
In the later part of the course, visits are arranged to other stud farms, racing stables and sales companies. Learners are encouraged to interact with their personnel to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of each business area.
