LUCA Cumani reflected on an “emotional” afternoon after God Given provided the soon-to-retire trainer with a 50th and final Group 1 success in the Premio Lydia Tesio at Capannelle in Rome on Sunday.
Winner of the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster on her penultimate start before finishing sixth on Champions Day at Ascot, she was ridden by this season’s champion apprentice Jason Watson. The daughter of Nathaniel looked set for minor honours when her fellow British raiders Nyaleti and Snowy Winter drew clear, but knuckled down between the pair as the post loomed to claim a poignant success in her trainer’s homeland.
Mark Johnston’s Nyaleti was second, ahead of the Archie Watson-trained Snowy Winter in third.
The 69-year-old Cumani said: “It’s fantastic. I’m delighted for the filly and delighted for the owner-breeder [Andrew Stone]. It’s great to have another Group 1 winner. It brought a tear to my eye – it’s a very emotional day.
“We knew she was a tough filly, and the mile and a quarter on the heavy ground really brought out her staying power.”
BRITISH TREBLE
Mark Johnston and Michael Bell also saddled winners on the card, both ridden by Joe Fanning. The Johnston-trained Masham Star, a four-year-old gelding by Lawman, ran out a wide-margin winner of the Group 3 Premio Ribot Memorial Loreto Luciano over a mile.
Bell’s winner came courtesy of Stage Play, a two-year-old filly by Oasis Dream bred by Louise Quinn and now owned by Steve Parkin’s Clipper Logistics. A winner in June, Stage Play gained valuable blacktype in the Listed Premio Divino Amore over five furlongs.
There were several other Irish-foaled winners at the Rome racecourse on Sunday. Va Bank, a prolific winner in Poland and now trained in Germany by Andreas Wohler, landed the 10-furlong Group 2 Premio GBI Racing Roma Champion by a head. The winner is by the late Archipenko and was bred by Airlie Stud.
Paul and Billy McEnery of Vinesgrove Stud in Dunnamaggan, Co Kilkenny, bred Charline Royale, winner of the Group 3 Premio Carlo & Francesco Aloisi over six furlongs. The three-year-old filly is by Zebedee.
