CALARE fought off the opposition as she snatched Listed honours in the Staffordstown Stud Stakes at the Curragh.
The Godolphin-owned filly appeared to try to have a snap at Queen Anne's Lace, the 11-8 favourite, as she went past in the final furlong. Charlie Appleby's charge looked hemmed in on the far rail but James Doyle managed to move her out to deliver a winning challenge.
Following her antics, Calare (8-1) kept on strongly to beat Bound by three-quarters of a length with Queen Anne's Lace third. The result of the Listed contest was allowed to stand following a stewards' inquiry.
"She's a bit of a character. It (the biting) is usually not a bad sign and shows she has a bit of fire in her belly," said Doyle. "It got a bit tricky. We needed a little bit of luck which we didn't get, but when she got out, she showed a nice turn of foot and quickened up well. She's all right and had the form in the race."
Shanghai Glory (14-1) benefited from a drop back to six furlongs to take the Listed honours in the Elmer Hannon Travel Waterford Testimonial Stakes.
Beaten over seven furlongs in his last two starts, Charlie Hills' three-year-old showed he still has the toe for the shorter trip as he got the verdict by a length under William Buick from the fast-finishing Master Speaker.
"He likes that ground. He was always travelling well and picked up well. He probably won a bit cosy in the end," said Buick.
Alveena (11-4) got up in the shadow of the post to claim the Brown Panther Stakes. Pat Smullen had the Dermot Weld-trained filly at the back of the field and produced her with a well-timed run to grab the prize by a neck from Hibiscus.
"She's a very brave mare and has been winning all year for us," said Weld. "That's her last run and it's job done now. She's a stakes winner and is Group 2-placed so I'm very pleased with the year."
Laws Of Spin (7-1) stayed on best of all to give Willie Mullins back-to-back victories in the Tote Irish Cesarewitch. Mullins struck gold with Digeanta in 2015 and Laws Of Spin was the last runner to make the cut for the two-mile heat. Produced with perfect timing by Chris Hayes, Laws Of Spin came with a telling finish to score by a length and a quarter from Cradle Mountain.
Mullins' son Patrick said: "He stays very well and might jump a hurdle, but today was the plan and we haven't thought beyond this. We'll talk to the owner now."
