GUSTAV Klimt was made to pull out all the stops to justify his cramped odds in Newmarket's Group 2 bet365 Superlative Stakes.

Aidan O'Brien's youngster was the 5/6 favourite for the seven-furlong contest after opening his account at the Curragh just under a fortnight ago, but was under pressure some way from home.

He was short of room with two furlongs to run and jockey Ryan Moore made the bold decision to switch his mount widest of all before throwing down his challenge.

Nebo hit the front in the final furlong, but Gustav Klimt was really rolling against the far rail and got up to beat him by a head. Great Prospector was third.

Moore said: "He's a very good horse. I really liked him on both of his (previous) starts. The gap was there and just when we went to go in there we sort of rolled and he was pinched out of it.

"He ran really green because he'd never been in tight, but it was a very good performance to get back up from there. He's a really nice horse with a lot of potential. He settles very well and he's got a very good turn of foot."

Following the race, the winner was made 6/1 favourite for next year's Qipco 2000 Guineas with Coral.

O'Brien said: "I am delighted with him. Ryan felt the last day when he let him go at the Curragh he surprised him how quick he quickened and he was always going to take his time on him. He was just coming and it got a little bit tight, but he switched him very quick and he took off. So you would have to be very happy, really.

"We always thought he would be a National Stakes and Dewhurst-type horse. Obviously we have the Futurity and that is a Group 2. They are the races we would be thinking of."

Charlie Hills could explore options abroad for the runner-up. The Lambourn handler said: "He has run a great race. I think he is quick enough for six. He is just a proper two-year-old. He probably just got a little bit lost in the dip. When he hit the rising ground he came on again. He has got a few entries abroad."

MOYGLARE CANDIDATE

The Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh on September 10 is the likely next port of call for Poetic Charm after she made an impressive start to her career in the Rossdales EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Newmarket.

The daughter of Dubawi travelled powerfully for much of the seven-furlong contest in the hands of William Buick and while she showed signs of inexperience when asked to go about her business, her latent talent carried the half-sister to Teofilo to an impressive length success over Aidan O'Brien's 6/4 favourite Sizzling.

Trainer Charlie Appleby said of the 3/1 winner: "She did a nice bit of work the other day and the fillies are just coming to hand now. I've not really run many fillies as they have taken time to come to hand.

"I thought the other filly (Sizzling) would have to be smart to get past her. She has got a great pedigree and trip-wise she will get further. She would be fine over seven furlongs or a mile.

"I know this was only a maiden, but she has got plenty of boot. She travelled very well and picked up well. She is a filly with a bright future. The Moyglare (Curragh, September 10), on the back of that, is quite a realistic target.

"To be fair, it is a little bit tricky placing fillies like this when they win a class two maiden as it rules them out of novice events. She might be one that has to be thrown in the deep end and go straight there."
