Describe Cheltenham Festival in three words.
Quick, long and intense.
What’s your go-to celebration when crossing the line after a winner?
It depends! If you’re riding a favourite there’s obviously a relief whereas with a 20/1 shot it’s a bit different. Last year with Jasmin De Vaux I didn’t have any celebration, I don’t know why, I just crossed the line. I don’t have one set up, like a Russell or a Paul Townend kind of celebration.
Are there any big characters that you’re looking forward to seeing over there?
As far as horses go, I’m fascinated to see how Salvator Mundi gets on over there, he’s going to be a difficult ride.
It’ll be interesting to see the novices like Kopek Des Bordes and Final Demand having their first run at Cheltenham and how they’ll adapt to it as neither of them have a whole lot of racing experience. In the weigh room it’s always fun to meet the English jockeys, we see them here and there, Sam Twiston-Davies is always good for a laugh.
Who would you least like to be stuck next to on the plane to Cheltenham?
Danny (Mullins) or Emmet (Mullins) probably. You don’t want to be too close to your family at that stage! On the way home, if they’ve had a winner it would be okay but if they hadn’t you definitely wouldn’t go home with them.
Is there a different atmosphere in the weigh room over there compared to a normal meeting at home?
I think it depends what your rides are. If you’re trying to stay focussed and quiet you can do that. In all of the races there will be three or four guys with fancied rides, and everyone else can be more relaxed with some laughing and joking. It gets a bit quieter before the big races but overall it’s pretty relaxed.
