AS was outlined elsewhere on this page, the Sunday meeting at Portmarnock was a triumph for the stallion For A Few Dollars More.
Perhaps it was having to remember a face mask but the driver of Ladyford Dollar, Walter Stewart, forgot to fasten his helmet leading to one of the photographs of the year. “I was going so fast my helmet flew off,” joked the Coleraine-based owner/driver.
Darren Timlin continues to extract a good tune from Flatteur and made it two from two in the Grade F trot. The selection panel spoke well of Flatteur after the French trip.
The Fermanagh connection also notched up a respectable second when Wayne Swindle drove Pan Cam Mystery behind Ladyford Buck.
In the final race on the card, Wayne enjoyed a pillar-to-post win aboard Dollar Vert, a superb training performance. This ‘Dollar’ is no relation to the Coleraine ‘Dollar’.
Old faithful Urbano de Selles once more earned his corn for the Red Baron, Billy Roche in the Grade E trot. The 12-year-old will come in for more pampering from groom and niece Emma Roche.
Double
Billy clocked up a double on the day and a treble on the weekend when Rhyds Rival ran away with the D and E pace. The winner has been lightly raced and will be on the premises in Lyre, a week from now. Awesome Dude (Seamus Quill) showed signs of a return to form as runner-up.
The Meadowbranch horses have not been firing as well as in 2019 so JR will be relieved that Biniou Du Beuvron saw out the mile and a half Grade C trot in steadfast fashion.
With the Delaney, Musselburgh and Tregaron festivals all falling foul of Covid-19 cancellations, all the major stables will be looking to Lyre as a pivotal point in the 2020 season.
Alan ‘veteran’ Wallace continued his renaissance when Rory Bridgette’s A Kind Of Magic tracked Meadowbranch Duke before pulling out cosily at the bar to score in 2.02.2.
THE Ballabuidhe committee wisely pulled their fixture forward by 24 hours due to a heavy rain forecast. They got the luck of the green with a successful dry meeting on Monday, August 3rd.
Seamus Quill from Kenmare emulated his younger brother with a double following Oisin’s brace last weekend. The trotter Destin Du Larre and the pacer Awesome Dude, well regarded by the Quills, were Seamus’ two winners.
Benny Camden, a class act returned from some recent setbacks with a cheeky win in the C and D pace for Donal Murphy.
Llwyns Delight scored a Treatymen over the Rebels victory when he and John Manning outfoxed Luke Kelleher and the doughty Meadowbranch Demon in a two-horse race.
Hail Caesar picked up an overdue win in the Grade G pace for Patrick Hill of Leap.
Dublin-based brothers-in-law Buster Gilligan and Sean Kane won their diesel money when both Honor Code and Duccio obliged.
