SOUTHERN REGION,
BROADFORD
IT was a long day at Broadford Races in Limerick last Sunday where a large crowd attended the Southern Region meeting which was the highlight of the local community festival. Including the two confined local races, 14 races took place and Shane Crosse took the riding honours with a treble, Philip Byrnes took the feature event of the day, and 14-year-old Jack Gilligan registered his first ever win.
The Gilligans from Craughwell in Galway had a busy day with Daniel going to Navan while Jack headed to Broadford. All the efforts of their parents was rewarded, however, as Jack won the 14hh race on Bubalicious, his first ever winner, emulating Daniel who was also successful in the 14hh race in Navan. Jack gave the pony a fine ride as they had to dig deep up the straight for a hard earned half-length win from Tell The Story.
Shane Crosse opened his account for the day in the mile race where he partnered Razzle Dazzle for owner P.J. Moloney. The winner, who is trained by Listowel-based Mikey Mulvihill, made pretty much all of the running.
Shane then went on to win the maiden race over 12 furlongs on High Hill Beauty who got her head in front in the final stride to deny the Gavin Brouder-ridden The Poacher.
He also landed the local horse race on Simply The Best, denying the David Geary-owned Sleepy Lady. However, David, the hardworking local organiser, got his winner in the local pony race where Moyvane Lady repeated her win from the previous year in the hands of Gavin Brouder. The pair came in to a tremendous reception.
FEATURE
The feature event of the day, the Broadford Derby run over two miles, was won by Philip Byrnes riding for his mother Cora on Make Me. This winner could be picked out a long way from home as from halfway he was the only one still travelling easily. Philip holds a strong hand in the forthcoming Dingle Derby with this winner likely to be his second option after his mother’s other horse Bash It On.
Michael O’Connor is another young rider making a good impression and he will go to Dingle with confidence regarding the 13.2hh race as Hello Star again showed herself to be in a different league to the opposition as she won with ease from Carrig Ava who took second spot.
The winner is owned by The Curly Syndicate from Listowel as they also took the opening 12.2hh race where Another Tiger won under Conor Walsh, with Biscuit staying on strongly to take second.
O’Connor, based in Middleton, completed a double of his own when he won the mile maiden race on Pavlova for the Three County Syndicate, making every post a winning one.
Mikey Sheehy had a quiet day winners-wise, by his standards, but he didn’t go home empty handed as he won the 10-furlong race on Man Of Steel for Batsy Maher.
two KINGS
Rory and Daniel King will both be hoping to follow in the footsteps of their brother Connor, who was the leading rider on the circuit before establishing himself on the racecourse, and they both visited the winner’s enclosure last Sunday.
Daniel was the first to collect as he teamed up with Dinny and Ellen Hayes to win an eventful 15hh race where runner-up Bubba Watson didn’t do himself any favours by running very wide off the bend at halfway, while Danny and Amy’s Magic hugged the rails. This was Daniel’s first outside of pony classes.
Rory later took the 12-furlong consolation race on Ballybrown Boy for Deelview Racing, with whom Connor had considerable success with back in his days pony racing.
Ross Sugrue took the other 12-furlong race on Wild Wind, leading from halfway to win from Who’s Your Daddy who was never really at home on the tight track.
Joey Sheridan and One of The Boys won their fourth race of the season in the 14.2hh Race as they quickened away impressively inside the final furlong to win from Sandycove.
