THE domestic flat season is rapidly drawing to a close and, with just a handful of pattern races remaining, much of the interest over the coming weeks will focus on various two-year-old maidens and the prospects of their winners making their mark at a high level in 2022.

The incomparable Galileo emerged from a Leopardstown maiden in the final few weeks of the 2000 season while more recently classic winners such as Awtaad and Galileo Chrome have been in action very late in the campaign.

Leopardstown maidens

The last-named duo also came out of Leopardstown maidens which means that various contests at the track both this weekend and next will warrant close consideration.

However, one will have to go a long way to find a more arresting classic prospect than Limiti Di Greccio who notched up her second win of the season in the Staffordstown Stud Stakes last Sunday at theCurragh.

At countless points in the straight, the Paddy Twomey-trained filly was stopped in her tracks but somehow she found a way to emerge victorious after getting to the front with around 50 yards to run.

Group 1 pretensions

In her four previous starts this filly had looked smart but Sunday’s victory over a field which included the Moyglare third, Sunset Shiraz, suggested that this filly has Group 1 pretensions. Indeed her effort last weekend indicated that there won’t be many fillies ahead of her in the pecking order when it comes to next year’s 1000 Guineas.

Her trainer Paddy Twomey has come within touching distance of a classic triumph in the formative stages of his training career and in this filly he might just have care of his first classic winner.
