DOWNPATRICK Racecourse manager Richard Lyttle and Irish Horse World correspondent Ruth Loney were among spectators at the Saintfield Christmas Charity Ride which took place in the Co Down market town last Saturday.

Organiser Joan Cunningham was delighted with the turn-out of mounted Santas which she led on a quiet grey gelding. She rode astride while accompanied on either side by Ashleigh Kirkpatrick and Megan Hamil who both rode side-saddle.

‘The real Santa’ led the ride up the Main Street of Saintfield in a carriage drawn by Angelo Kane’s stunning Friesian horses and he was followed by some VIP guests in John McDermott’s carriage which was drawn by two Clydesdales. All the while, music rang out through the town from Gerard Dornan (Country Harmony) and Box Car Brian. Racing’s own comedian, Terence McKeag, kept the craic going non-stop.

When the ride moved on from the town’s Christmas tree, it did a full circuit of the Fair Green before heading back down Main Street and returning to the Livestock Mart for lunch, more music and lots more craic.

“I was thrilled with the success of the whole day,” said Joan. “I would like to thank the Murphy family for their kindness in giving us the use of Saintfield Livestock Mart, North Down Marquees and every sponsor, the PSNI who did an incredible job, the media and every person who helped in any way to make the whole day such a success. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year.”
