CAULFIELD trainer Mick Price celebrated one of his finest training achievements on Saturday with his top two runners in the A$1.5 million Blue Diamond Stakes landing the quinella. The Price duo of Extreme Choice and Flying Artie had been all the rage in the lead up to Victoria’s richest juvenile race.

“They are two good colts,” said an understated Price. “Let’s go to Sydney. We’ve got three weeks until the (Golden) Slipper and they’ve both showed they have what it takes. Flying Artie will have to pay a $150,000 late entry fee but I’m sure the owners will after what he did today.”

The long striding Artie Schiller colt, Flying Artie, was bumped wide on the turn and had to make up a lot of ground if he was to beat his stable-mate. Conversely Extreme Choice just about had the run of the race, once jockey Craig Newitt had eased him across from his wide barrier to be in striking distance three wide.

Hitting the front at the top of the straight the Not A Single Doubt colt broke to win by nearly two lengths as Flying Artie put a four-length gap into the third placed Redoute’s Choice filly Zamzam. Extreme Choice, a $100,000 at the Inglis Classic yearling was selected by Price whilst Flying Artie was a $50,000 Inglis Easter yearling sent to Price after the sale.
