Dubai Golden Shaheen (Group 1)
AMERICAN raider Zenden ran out a brilliant victor of the $1.5 million Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in record time, but there was a sad postscript when the winner suffered a fatal injury after the finishing post.
Winning jockey Antonio Fresu was unshipped from the horse after they crossed the line, and the rider was quickly on his feet and was there to comfort his mount. The five-year-old entire was crediting his trainer Carlos David with his first graded stakes success, and the son of Fed Biz came to the race on the back of a successful prep run at Tampa in Florida. David has only held a licence to train since last year.
Though he looked to have an unfavourable draw on the outside of the field of 14, Fresu made a swift move early in the race to take a rail position and they were soon leading the field.
Zenden powered clear of his opposition as he turned into the home straight, eventually winning by three and a quarter lengths.
In a night of seconds for runners from Japan, Red Le Zele, trained by Takayuki Yasuda, was another, while the Doug Watson-trained Canvassed was two and three-quarter lengths further back in third.
Ryan Moore was on the runner-up and said: “My horse ran super. Six furlongs was a bit sharp for him. He needs to step up in trip, but he ran a lovely race.”
