GOLDENCENTS avenged his loss in last year’s Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes with a dominating wire-to-wire track record performance in this year’s running at Del Mar last Sunday.

Sent to the front by jockey Rafael Bejarano, Goldencents never looked back, prevailing by four and a quarter lengths over Fed Biz and Silentio a length and a half back in third.

It was the sixth win for the four-year-old colt by Into Mischief. After finishing second in both of his starts this year, the Metropolitan Handicap and the Bing Crosby, both Grade 1, Goldencents found the winner’s circle for the first time since capturing last year’s Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

“He’s run so well up front,” said trainer Doug O’Neill. “Raffy (Bejarano) brought it up and said he was going to be aggressive with him. What a horse.”

Tom’s Tribute surprised the heavily-favoured Obviously in the Del Mar Mile and will make his next start in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Tom’s Tribute won the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile by a length for Mike Smith from Rock Me Baby, who finished a half-length in front of Handsome Mike.

Obviously, who won the race in 2012 and 2013, finished fourth after breaking slowly and being rushed to the lead, and faded in the final furlong.
