1.15 Tote Never Beaten By SP Irish EBF Maiden 6f

A bit of a guessing game, with only one of the 11 runners having been seen before. Joseph O’Brien won this maiden 12 months ago with Cowardofthecounty and a chance is taken on Green Sense following suit for the same outfit this time. By Starman, who supplied a recent impressive juvenile maiden winner at Dundalk for Ger Lyons, this €90,000 yearling purchase is a half-sister to two blacktype performers.

Nearly all of the top yards are represented here and the market will be well worth paying attention to. Ryan Moore favours Extravagant from the Ballydoyle duo, a Wootton Bassett colt with a fascinating pedigree as a half-brother to Group 1 Prix Ganay winner Cloth Of Stars.

SELECTION: GREEN SENSE

Paddy Twomey and Billy Lee struck with an impressive first-time-out winner at Leopardstown on Wednesday and No Alibi gets a tentative nod to do the same for that team. This three-year-old filly by Breeders’ Cup Classic-winning sire Blame is a half-sister to the same connections’ Treasure Trove, who was a listed and Group 3 winner at two over five and six furlongs.

It was a likeable introduction from Johnny Feane’s Spodo Komodo at Dundalk behind the Twomey-trained Currawood at Dundalk last month, and he could have progression to come if as effective back at six furlongs (seven furlongs last time).

Charles Darwin, a full-brother to Group 1 winner Blackbeard, received a favourable mention at a recent Ballydoyle press morning and gets the nod in what is bound to be an informative early-season two-year-old contest. Blackbeard made a winning debut at this time of year as a two-year-old.

Ger Lyons has already got on the juvenile scoresheet this season and Evening Blues, a smartly-bred Moyglare colt by Blue Point, makes plenty of appeal on paper. Neolithic and Aegina are other newcomers worth a second look, given their price tags of 210,000gns (foal) and £240,000 (yearling) respectively.

Betsen has been in fine shape to start the new season, not beaten all that far on either of his first two starts at this venue, and he might be able to make his class count as topweight here. He’s been showing well on soft ground the last twice but his maiden win came on good at Down Royal, so he is capable of being effective on a better surface like this.

Gutsy Girl was making her first start for Joseph O’Brien, and her first start for 186 days, when fourth to stablemate Lady With The Lamp in listed company last Sunday. That was a positive showing, given she’d have been fully entitled to come forward for the run.

Aidan O’Brien won this race 12 months ago with a three-year-old taking advantage of the 15lb age allowance and could do the same again with Whirl, the mount of Ryan Moore. She won a Group 3 here on soft ground on her final start last season, but showed a bit of ground versatility when winning a Doncaster maiden on good previously.

Azada, a listed winner when last seen in the autumn, is of interest if able to be at her best on this ground, while Bright Thunder stands out on ratings for Karl Burke. It raises the eyebrow slightly that she returns in a first-time tongue-tie, though. Naomi Lapaglia rates a fascinating recruit for the in-form Ger Lyons team, having changed hands for 475,000gns in December.

Secret Magician was beaten a short-head off this same mark here last season behind the useful Keke and another bold bid looks on the cards after blowing the cobwebs away at Naas recently. Martin Hasset’s charge clearly likes the Curragh. Neo Smart showed up well last time at Leopardstown and makes the shortlist, while Sugar Club shouldn’t be dismissed as she returns to a more favourable trip. She has form on decent ground too.

Jockey bookings point to Jan Brueghel being the most forward of the high-class Ballydoyle pair here, with Ryan Moore booked for last season’s unbeaten St Leger winner. A tilt at the Melbourne Cup was scuppered due to veterinary checks down under, and he probably needs further to be at his best, but he did win at 10 furlongs around here last season.

Los Angeles was declared originally before being taken out at lunchtime on Thursday due to being off his feed. The same stable’s Tower Of London is officially rated 1lb higher than Jan Brueghel. However, he will likely find this too sharp for him on the basis of his staying-on Curragh Cup success when last seen.

Crystal Black enjoyed a sensational rise through the ranks last term, though whether he’ll be cherry-ripe for this is up for debate. Galen is the one who could be dangerous from a race-fit perspective, having been in action at Meydan in recent months.

A tricky contest to close out the card that might go the way of Ted Walsh’s Sakakawea, after making a satisfactory comeback at Naas behind a ridiculously easy winner. Perhaps she wants more of an ease in the ground to be seen at her best but she’s relatively lightly raced and could be on a reasonable mark, while also having the benefit of a recent run.

Gazelle d’Or had a decent time of it last season, signing off with a win at Navan when last seen in October. If her 185-day absence doesn’t count against her, she should be in the mix again. She gets a 12lb pull at the weights from her elders.
