Deauville Sunday

2.50 Darley Prix Morny – Finale Des Darley Series (Group 1) (2yo Colts & Fillies) 6f

Gavin Cromwell has been getting used to having Grade 1 National Hunt winners over the last couple of years but he can break new ground at Deauville tomorrow when Quick Suzy can notch his first Group 1 flat victory in the Darley Prix Morny.

This daughter of Profitable, who cost just €20,000 as a yearling, has not been seen out since she landed the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, but fillies have a fabulous recent record in France’s top summer two-year-old race and Quick Suzy can follow in the hoofprints of the American speedsters Lady Aurelia and Campanelle by completing the Queen Mary/Morny double.

She will have to overcome the biggest field for over a decade, with Joseph O’Brien’s unbeaten Group 2 winner Velocidad among her 13 opponents.

Other leading candidates are the recent Glorious Goodwood scorers Asymmetric and Armor, but it is Richard Fahey’s Norfolk Stakes hero Perfect Power, fearfully unlucky when fourth to Asymmetric in the Richmond Stakes, who may chase her home.

SELECTION: QUICK SUZY

Next Best: Perfect Power

3.25 Darley Prix Jean Romanet (Group 1) (4yo+ Fillies & Mares) 1m 2f

Lady Bowthorpe, who last month gave trainer William Jarvis his first Group 1 victory in almost three decades, and Ebaiyra, bidding to give veteran handler Alain de Royer-Dupre a top-level victory in his farewell season, are the sentimental favourites for this eight-runner affair.

But Joseph O’Brien’s fast-improving Thundering Nights, one of three Irish hopes in the line-up, gained the notable scalp of subsequent dual American big race winner Santa Barbara when landing the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes last time out and can play the role of giantkiller once again.

The other Irish representatives are Jessica Harrington’s Cayenne Pepper, an admirably consistent sort but winless in six Group 1 tries to date, and Willie McCreery’s Insinuendo, a Group 2 scorer at the Curragh last month but over three lengths behind Thundering Nights on her previous start.

Audarya and Ambition, first and second in this race 12 months ago, renew their acquaintanceship. But between them they can muster just three starts and no victories this term and they are both hard to fancy.

SELECTION: THUNDERING NIGHTS Next Best: Lady Bowthorpe

4.00 Darley Prix de Pomone (Group 2) (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) 1m 4f 110y

The much-respected de Royer-Dupre looks set to land a popular victory in the Darley Prix de Pomone with Valia. This Sea The Stars filly has been running over longer trips for almost a year now but is not short of speed and can overcome the imposition of a 2lb penalty to beat André Fabre’s fast-improving Joie De Soir.

Irish interest centres around Jessica Harrington’s three-time Group 3 runner-up Silence Please.

SELECTION: VALIA

Next Best: Joie De Soir

4.35 Darley Prix Kergorlay (Group 2) (3yo+) 1m 7f

With his Prix Maurice de Nieuil conqueror, Valia, preferring to run in the Pomone, the way is clear for Skazino to return to winning ways here. German visitor Rip Van Lips is the pick of his five opponents.

SELECTION: SKAZINO

Next Best: Rip Van Lips

1.33 Prix Du Calvados (Group 2) (2yo Fillies) 7f

Just five go to post, including the no-hoper Red Smile, and the two British invaders, Simon and Ed Crisford’s Fast Attack and the George Boughey-trained Oscula, are the ones to concentrate on.

Oscula appreciated the soft ground when landing the Prix Six Perfections over this course and distance but, unless it pours down beforehand, preference is for Fast Attack, six-length winner of her only start to date.

SELECTION: FAST ATTACK

Next Best: Oscula

4.00 Prix de la Nonette (Group 2) (3yo Fillies) 1m 2f

An exceptionally strong renewal with eight pattern winners among the 10 runners – the other two last-time-out listed scorers – so the result will have massive implications for upcoming Group 1s the Prix Vermeille and the Prix de l’Opera.

The pick of three André Fabre representatives, Babylone can complete a hat-trick at the expense of the consistent Rougir. The only overseas contenders are Zeyaadah, Nassau Stakes runner-up from the Roger Varian yard, and Richard Hannon’s lightly raced Aristia.

SELECTION: BABYLONE

Next Best: Rougir
