GERMANY hosts a Group 1 in Cologne today, the Preis von Europa, and it has two British challengers. It looks another good opportunity for a Godolphin winner as Barney Roy bids to add to his Munich win three weeks ago in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis. The extra two furlongs are the big worry for the son of Excelebration however.
The opposition includes Ed Vaughan’s Princess of Wales’s Stakes winner Dame Malliot. She will be the first ride in a Group 1 for Hollie Doyle.
Czech star Nagano Gold lost out narrowly to Way To Paris in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and had been second to Defoe in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot last year. This looks a good opportunity for him.
Last year’s German Derby winner Laccario makes his seasonal reappearance. He ran twice after his classic success, no match for Ghaiyyath in the Grosser Preis von Baden and beaten by a nose in a Group 3 in October.
There are two three-year-olds in the line up: Grocer Jack and Kaspar, third and fourth in the German Derby, though Grocer Jack was later disqualified for a banned substance positive test.
