AIDAN O’Brien has already saddled the winners of 22 Group 1 races this year and the champion trainer of Ireland and Britain has a great chance to end the year on a high at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Highland Reel, already the winner of the King George at Ascot and the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita this season, is a hot favourite to repeat his success of last year in the 12-furlong Vase.
All four international races will be shown on At The Races and Racing UK.
6.00 HONG KONG VASE (GROUP 1) TURF 3YO+ 1M 4F
It would be a fitting finale if Highland Reel could end his season with another victory in the Vase. He began it with a fourth in the Dubai Sheema Classic behind Postponed in March and brought him to six countries with wins in the King George at Ascot and Breeders’ Cup Turf.
His 10 draw is not ideal but he is effective from the front and has Ryan Moore in the saddle this time. Pat Keating is pleased with his preparation.
Big Orange travels up from Australia where he was down the field in the Melbourne Cup and third last time in the Group 2 Zipping Classic.
Garlingari represents Corine Barande-Barbe and is joined by Silverwave and One Foot In Heaven from France.
The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner is drawn one for Pascal Bary and is expected to be better suited by this race than the Arc where he finished unplaced. Nuovo Record and Smart Layer are two Japanese mares that could take a hand.
Selection: HIGHLAND REEL Next best: SILVERWARE
6.40 HONG KONG SPRINT (GROUP 1) TURF 3YO+ 6F
Last year the Irish-bred Peniaphobia won this from stall 14 and must have a chance again with a much better draw in stall one this time. All the locals have managed to bag low-number draws, including rising stars Lucky Bubbles and Notlistenin’tome. They filled the first two spots in the recent Sprint trial here and can so again.
French trainer Francois Rohaut was appalled to see his Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Signs Of Blessing drawn on the wide outside. “It is a catastrophe,” he said. Japanese fancy Big Arthur fared little better in stall 13. Connections of Australian sprinter Takedown have been making bullish statements this week about their chances and he is a good each-way bet at 12/1. Richard Fahey, former trainer of Peniaphobia, is represented by 50/1 chance Growl.
Selection: LUCKY BUBBLES
Next best: NOTLISTENIN’TOME
7.50 HONG KONG MILE (GROUP 1) TURF 3YO+ 1M
A wide-open race in which Cougar Mountain is the sole European representative. Donnacha O’Brien’s well-travelled mount has always come up short at the highest level.
The 2014 winner Able Friend heads the market at around 5/1. He was third in this last year but has only started once since then and trainer John Moore is concerned about the horse’s fitness. A poor draw hasn’t helped the horse’s chances.
The recent home trial for this race was won by the Irish-bred Beauty Flame, an Italian import to Hong Kong and a very consistent performer. A close third in that trial was Sun Jewellery and his trainer John Size expects a huge run from Silvestre de Sousa’s mount. At 7/1 he represents fair value.
Selection: SUN JEWELLERY Next best: BEAUTY ONLY
8.30 HONG KONG CUP (GROUP 1) TURF 3YO+ 1M 2F
This looks a match between the Japanese stars Maurice and A Shin Hikari.
Impressive Prix d’Ispahan winner A Shin Hikari is the likely front-runner and is well drawn but Maurice and Ryan Moore look a deadly combination.
He proved he stayed 10 furlongs in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) where he had Lovely Day ninth and A Shin Hikari only 12th.
Lovely Day and Queens Ring are also capable of big runs for Japan.
Home defenders Blazing Speed and Designs On Rome cannot be ruled out, while Secret Weapon won the trial here last month.
Andre Fabre runs German Group 1 winner Elliptique, though he is without a win in his last two runs.
Selection: MAURICE
Next Best: BLAZING SPEED
