THE dual champion filly Songbird is a short-priced favourite against five others in the mile and a quarter test tonight in the Grade 1 Delaware Handicap at Delaware Park. Beaten just once and by the narrowest margin by Beholder in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff, the filly should not be toubled after an impressive comeback win at Belmont in June in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes.
Weep No More won last year’s Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland, but is winless in five outings since, three in Grade 1s, and is the second favourite. Martini Glass has three Tampa Bay wins this season but this is a huge step up.
At Los Alamitos the Grade 3 Derby sees the reappearance of Klimt, a juvenile standout in California, who makes his first start since an eighth-place Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
The colt is now trained by Art Sherman for owner Kaleem Shah after a fallout with previous trainer Bob Baffert.
