PENNSYLVANIAN trainer Leslie Falini Young, who is married to Banbridge-born Paddy Young, the five-time US champion jumps jockey, sent out six winners last weekend as she bids to win the jump trainers’ title for the second season running.

The first meeting of the ‘Fall’ campaign was held on Saturday at Shawan Downs, Maryland, where Young initiated a treble in the two-mile maiden hurdle with the Mikey Hamill-partnered Chosen Judge.

On his only previous start, this Rule Of Law bay won a four-year-old geldings’ maiden at Dromahane on the last day of April for the Colin Bowe yard.

Freddie Proctor was on board Young’s other two winners, Total Joy in the two-mile allowance hurdle and the French-bred Salamanca School in the three-mile, one-furlong maiden timber race.

The former, a four-year-old Ribchester gelding, is now two for two since being purchased by his present handler for just 10,000gns at Tattersalls Newmarket last October.

There were two other winners of note on Saturday starting with Cracker Factory who landed the three-mile, one-furlong timber stakes for trainer Mark Beecher, the Waterford native who, as an amateur, was once based in Co Down.

The concluding amateur/apprentice timber race over the same trip was won by the Ricky Hendriks-trained Chosen Mate, a Well Chosen gelding who started his career in the care of Colin McKeever whose colours he carried to victory in a five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Loughbrickland in October 2018.

Charlottesville

On Sunday, the action moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, for the Foxfield Fall Races where Proctor was again on board two of Young’s three winners, the Irish-bred Garrison Forest (a well-related four-year-old Walk In The Park gelding) in the two-mile, one-furlong maiden hurdle and the US-bred Arrowheart in the two-mile, two-furlong handicap hurdle.

Mikey Hamill came in for the winning ride in the training flat race over 10 furlongs on the Irish-bred The Hero Next Door who was having his first start since falling in May when bidding to bring up a hat-trick in three US outings.

Through Hamish Macauley Bloodstock, Young gave £120,000 at Tattersalls Cheltenham last December for this Jet Away gelding who, on his second start for Downpatrick’s Patrick Turley, had won a four-year-old maiden at Kirkistown the previous month under Deckie Lavery. The Hero Next Door was led up on Sunday by Paddy Young.

Castletown-Geoghegan

Earlier on Sunday, back here in Ireland, in Castletown-Geoghegan in fact, Turley and Lavery landed the concluding six-year-old and upwards maiden with the newcomer Lecale Way, a 2017 Getaway gelding out of the Bob Back mare Island Walk.

The chesnut is entered in the Dennison JCB winners’ of one today at Toomebridge where the first race is due off at 2pm.

IT’s been a while since we wrote about Pat Collins so it was great to see the Bessbrook owner/trainer have a winner on Monday at Fairyhouse.

The horse in question was the 15/2 shot Leahs Tricks who, ridden by Danny Mullins, scored by half a length from the 7/4 favourite, Rockstown Girl, in the opening two-mile mares’ maiden hurdle.

The winning five-year-old Champs Elysees bay, who was having her fourth career start, her third over hurdles, was bred by Collins’ daughter Amy and is the third of five recorded foals out of Bag Of Tricks.

That 2011 Flemensfirth mare, who comes from the family of Splendour and Atone, is dam previously of the Westerner gelding Amarillo Sky the winner of a point-to-point, two hurdle races and two chases.

Also on Monday, but at Newcastle, there was a win for the Cecil and Martin McCracken-bred Consoling, a two-year-old Inns Of Court filly who was visiting the winner’s enclosure for the second time in six starts. The bay, who is out of the Langfuhr mare Solace, is catalogued as Lot 1196 at the Tattersalls Newmarket Autumn horses-in-training sale towards the end of this month.

Consoling is trained by Ollie Pears who purchased her Cotai Glory yearling half-brother for €38,000 at Goffs late last month.

Second win

Over jumps, the Gordon Elliott-trained Ringdufferin scored for the second time in succession when landing the three-mile handicap hurdle at Gowran on Saturday in the colours of joint-breeder Alan Dunlop.

Last Thursday week, Ado McGuinness saddled Distillate to win at Bellewstown for the trio of Mark Devlin, Nigel O’Hare and Philip Smith, while Noel Kelly sent out the TSM Racing Syndicate-owned Court Cave to win again at Clonmel on the same afternoon.

The Paul Rooney-owned Slieve Binnian recorded his third career win at the Dundalk meeting on Friday evening and, ahead of the Ladbrokes Festival of Racing at Down Royal next month, the Pat Sloan-owned Pats Choice displayed his well being by winning again at Galway on Tuesday. for the Elliot stable.

Loney’s Tomboy stars

MANY congratulations to Richill equestrian journalist Ruth Loney, who is also well-known among the racing fraternity, for breeding Bellevue Tomboy, winner of the working hunter championship at the Horse of the Year Show in Birmingham on Wednesday.

Ruth, who bred the 15-year-old Laughton’s Flight gelding out of her Hail Station mare Belle Toy Story, didn’t travel over to show on Wednesday.

“Not only did I not go, I didn’t even follow the livesteam either in case I jinxed him!” revealed the delighted breeder.

“When I sold him, he went eventing with Piggy French (now Marsh) and was second first time out. However, after his next run she thought he was too small for eventing and so he started working hunters instead.”

Taking on 38 of the best working hunters around, Bellevue Tomboy, who qualified for the championships first time out this season, produced one of only five clear rounds under his owner, Matthew Cooper.

This was a first win for the combination at HOYS although they have competed there each year since 2014. Matthew and ‘Tommy’ will return to the Andrews Bowen International Arena tomorrow evening for the Supreme Products Supreme Horse of the Year Championship.
