TIMING is everything in racing.
Racehorse owner and businessman Ger Teahon got it right this week when he featured in The Irish Times’ Me and My Money column, a day after he was in the winner’s enclosure at Punchestown with Will The Wise.
From Kerry, Ger is a member of the Yellow Furze Syndicate which has had great success with Stumptown, trained by Gavin Cromwell.
Ger is also the founder and chief executive of Uniquely, an award-winning sales and customer service business.
The Irish Times asked Ger the usual 15 questions on personal finance but his answers were atypical. One of the questions asks ‘Are you a gambler?’ and almost always the respondent will say they never gamble except for an odd Lottery ticket.
Ger told them: “I love my horses and I love a flutter.” He then related a tale of how he backed three winners at Cheltenham in 2002 and paid off his student loans.
Asked to name his latest big purchase and if it was good value, Ger replied: “A horse called Will The Wise, as part of a syndicate. Value for money? I hope so.”
Ger did admit to having the odd bit of bad luck. “In terms of losing money stupidly I lost a coat on the Wednesday of the Punchestown Festival. It was new, with a good day’s winnings in the pockets. I hope whoever found it needed it and enjoyed it.”
