IN January we relayed news that retired bloodstock professional Paul Kerr was determined to climb Croagh Patrick to raise funds for motor neurone research.
Paul and pal Des McKay had hoped to join Charlie Bird on the climb today (April 2nd). However, for various reasons our heroes decided to tackle the reek during the recent good weather and sent us photographic evidence. Already €1,000 has been raised through Paul’s iDonate page.
Paul says: “Years ago I completed the eight-hour Tongariro Crossing in New Zealand, but Croagh Patrick is even harder.”

Francis honoured at Aintree
A LIFE-SIZE bronze of former champion jump jockey and international bestselling author Dick Francis is to be unveiled at Aintree Racecourse next week
The permanent tribute to Francis at the home of the Randox Grand National will celebrate his remarkable life, which saw him not only ride in the world’s most famous steeplechase on eight occasions, but also play a significant role in saving the track from development.
William Newton’s sculpture depicts Francis during his time as a jockey and was inspired by a photograph taken of him in the parade ring with Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother before he rode Devon Loch in the 1956 Grand National. That race provided one of the most dramatic finishes in Grand National history when Devon Loch inexplicably fell on the flat during the run-in just 40 yards from certain victory. An ongoing mystery!
