THE Moran family from Templemore, Co Tipperary, has produced another winner on the track.
One of the best known faces in Irish racing is that of Eddie Moran, who acts as owner liaison at a number of tracks.
Previously a publican, Eddie also made headlines as co-owner of Davids Lad, winner of the 2001 Irish Grand National.
Eddie is father of jockey Davy Moran who rode plenty of winner for Jim Bolger before heading to Canada where he is consistently among the top riders at Woodbine.
Now news reaches us that Davy’s son Pietro has emerged as one of the most exciting young jockeys on the circuit. Retired racing writer Ray Glennon, whose son Darren trains in Canada, reported: “Pietro rode his first winners last year but took a break to protect his claim and continue his university studies.
“He only resumed race-riding in May and had his first ride in a stakes race last Sunday. It was a Grade 2 race, he couldn’t use his 5lb claim, but he won. Take my word for it, Pietro Moran is going to be a star.”
Trainer Kevin Attard, who supplied Pietro with his big winner, said: “Pietro’s worked for us for a few years now and not only is he a great jockey, but a better human being. I love this kid and he’s going to be a great rider. I’m just so happy that he was part of this today. He’s breezed this filly on numerous occasions, and he just gave her a masterful ride. I’m just so happy for him.”
