IT was an eventful race in the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood on Tuesday, and there are two horses that caught my eye to follow on from here, writes Page Fuller.
Firstly, Audience showed that people should not take his easy running style in front for granted when he gets ground as quick as he likes it. Art Power helped him set strong, but even fractions in front, and he powered home into the home straight. He should not be underestimated when given these conditions.
It was Kinross in particular though who did well under the circumstances.
Audience and Art Power were the two quickest horses to 20mph with Kinross the fifth quickest. Even after breaking slightly slower, Rossa Ryan dropped anchor and pulled Kinross in to get cover. This meant that by the end of the first furlong, Kinross was already 1.08 seconds, six and a half lengths, behind Audience.
This ground he found difficult to claw back and considering Audience was still quickening when turning into the straight, Kinross did well to get within five lengths of the winner.
He also clocked the highest Top Speed - 42.29mph - of any runner in the race when running into the second last furlong. It was all a little too late.
This old boy may be in the twilight of his career, but I wouldn’t be writing him off just yet.
