THE final meeting at Ballinrobe this year proved a memorable one for Daniel King, who partnered his first treble from just three rides on the card as Solar Drive, Ah Fuhgeddaboudit and Likable Chancer all scored at combined odds of 560/1.

Solar Drive (9/2) showed the benefit of a run over hurdles at Killarney last month, when adding to two flat wins already this year in the opening Kog Logistics 3YO Maiden Hurdle.

The grey son of Mastercraftsman, trained by Paul Flynn for the Galway-based Solar Drive Six Syndicate, asserted between the final two flights and kept on well on the run-in to beat Kaptain Bay by a length and three-quarters.

“I had a lovely position everywhere. I would have liked a lead for a bit longer, but it was just the way the race was playing out and in fairness he galloped strong to the line,” said King before adding: “He’s very straight forward and jumped away bar one or two. He’s still learning and hopefully there is plenty more to come from him.”

Driven out

King followed up in the following Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Maiden Hurdle, where Ah Fuhgeddaboudit led after the penultimate flight and was driven out on the run-in to beat Mexican Moonshine by two lengths.

“She’s not overly big, but she’s a very good jumper and very honest. She jumped and travelled everywhere today. She was having a good look in front after the last, but she was good to the line,” said King of the 5/1 winner, trained by Denis Hogan for Michael Fennessy.

Likable Chancer completed a memorable evening for the Cork teenager in the Lodge At Ashford Castle Handicap Chase.

The 16/1 chance, who was available at 33/1 overnight and is trained by Danny Howard for his mother-in-law Annette Daffy, was also prominent throughout and took control from before the last to beat Fr Gilligansvoyge by seven lengths.

A delighted King (19) said afterwards: “My season was slow enough to get going, but thankfully it’s picked up and I’m starting to get a few more rides.

“It’s great when you have days like this, and all the hard work pays off. I was hopeful that I would get a winner, but to get three is great.”

Kearney hits target with Missile

JACK Kearney added to 40 winners on the flat when he partnered his first winner over jumps as Hypersonic Missile held off Missus Beeton by a diminishing half a length in the Michael Cawe Suspended Ceilings Handicap Hurdle.

The victory ended a frustrating spell for the Meath teenager since turning his attention to National Hunt.

“It’s been a while coming and I’ve hit the crossbar numerous times, so I’m delighted to get it. He pricked his ears when he got there, probably got there too soon, but all he does is stay galloping,” said Kearney of the Gavin Cromwell-trained 12/1 shot.

“The weight got a struggle on the flat and it was always in the back of my mind to go jumping.

“I’m with Gavin four days and Cian Collins two days a week. They are both very good to me and I also ride work for Gerry Keane as much as I can.”

De Bromhead one-two

The Matt Fitzgerald-owned Cobra Queen led home a one-two for the Henry de Bromhead yard in the featured Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Handicap Hurdle.

The well-backed 7/2 chance flashed her tail when ridden to lead on the run-in, but kept on well to beat Ring O Roses by a length and a quarter and winning rider Rachael Blackmore commented: “She swishes her tail, but that’s just what she does. She was good there and toughed it out.”

Itsalonglongroad, available at 20/1 earlier in the day and sent off at half those odds, recorded his 11th career win, when typically blazing a trail and holding on well in the closing stages under Shane O’Callaghan to beat Cahirdown Boy by half a length in the Adare Manor Opportunity Handicap Chase.

“He likes it around here, the undulating track suits him, and I’m delighted for Pat (O’Leary, owner) as he puts a lot of money into it,” said Killarney trained Charles Coakley.

“If the weather stays dry, we’ll probably get away with running him until the end of October, as this is his time of the year. We’ll see how he is in the morning, and he could run again at Tramore on Wednesday.”

Mullins’ combine for a winner each

A PENNY A Hundred, trained by Willie Mullins for Brendan O’Sullivan, added to a bumper and maiden hurdle win last year, when justifying 5/6 favouritism in the two-mile and seven furlongs P & D Lydon Mares Beginners Chase, making all under Danny Mullins and stretching clear after the last to beat She’s A Fine Wine by six lengths.

“It was a good performance and a deserved victory after she just got touched off in Tramore. She stays well and jumps well, so I’d say there will be plenty of fun to be had with her over fences from here on,” said the winning rider.

Danny’s cousin Emmet saddled another winning favourite in the OCL Laundry INH Flat Race, where Jerry From Kerry led entering the straight and soon asserted under John Gleeson to beat Windbeneathmywings by four lengths.

“It was a nice performance. It’s been a frustrating time lately and it’s nice to get that winner on the board,” said Mullins of the 6/4 shot, owned and bred by his father George.

“He could be a nice enough horse and there should be plenty of fun with him next season going over hurdles. I don’t think he’s a horse for the middle of the winter, so we’ll see how long the ground lasts.”
