JOCKEY Billy Coonan partnered his first winner when he rode a patient race on Tony Martin’s Movie King in the BoyleSports Handicap Hurdle over an extended two and a half miles.

The 8/1 shot raced in rear and still had plenty to do at the penultimate flight. However, he travelled notably well and progressed to fifth at the final hurdle.

He swept through between horses in the closing stages to win going away by two and a quarter lengths for the Yellow Sticker Syndicate.

Coonan said: “We went a good gallop and I settled him in behind, and he just kept picking up for me turning in. We thought the step up in trip would help him a lot.

“I started riding out for Tony about a year ago - I’m just in Maynooth about 10 minutes away. He has taught me loads over the years. He’s starting to give me a few rides now.”

Roedora made a winning debut for Joseph O’Brien in the BoyleSports (Pro-Am) Fillies INH Flat Race.

The Getaway filly justified 5/2 favouritism with victory by a length and three quarters. She was always close to the pace and moved to the front a furlong and a half down. From there, she stayed on well to score in the colours of Sarah O’Brien.

Jockey Tom Hamilton said: “I got a great run around. She is still plenty green and there’s lots of improvement in her. It is a great start. She was only just getting going at the line as well, she won plenty snug.

“Sarah has a brother going to the sales, so it is a good update for him.”

Shesadream (5/2) forged another link in the Gordon Elliott/Danny Gilligan connection in the BoyleSports Mares Hurdle over an extended two miles.

The Flemensfirth mare scooted away by four and a quarter lengths after her main rivals, Lady Of The Vale and Cash The Cheque, made mistakes at the penultimate obstacle.

Gilligan, in the Pioneer Racing colours, said: “She jumped brilliantly out there. She winged a couple of hurdles and I got a run up the inside, and that is probably what won it for her.

“She’s not the biggest mare in the world, but she is hardy and she is all heart.”

Bridges roared home by Bellaghy syndicate

BUILDING Bridges (12/1) was roared home by the plentiful members of the Taphouse Syndicate in the BoyleSports Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Hurdle.

He was always prominent under Oran McGill and made headway to lead at the bypassed third last. He moved clear two out and kept on well to see off 5/2 favourite Ossifer Hops by two and a half lengths.

Trainer Gary McGill said: “There’s a big syndicate of boys that own this horse. They are all Bellaghy men from Co Derry. DJ O’Kane owns the Taphouse Restaurant in Bellaghy and he is raising funds for leukemia. He was running a day at the races today.

“We pencilled this race in about two months ago and lucky enough it came off. The fourth in Leopardstown was a good run on ground I’d say didn’t suit him. He’s a summer horse. He’s an ex-flat horse and a good-ground horse.”

Ochocinco was another newcomer to put his best foot forward in the BoyleSports Opportunity Maiden Hurdle.

The five-year-old Kalanisi gelding put in good late work to run down 13/8 favourite Marv Michael by half a length at 13/2.

Liam McKenna, sporting Paul McKeon’s silks, said: “In fairness, he only started travelling coming to three out. Before that, I was at him the whole way.

“I was on the phone to Colm (Murphy, trainer) coming down and he was quite bullish about him. I’m not saying he expected him to win, but he expected him to run a big race.

“On slower ground he will be better as well. He’s a big strong horse and will jump a fence in time, I’d say he will be better over fences.”

Donovan delivers on Pro Bono

PRO Bono delivered by a neck at 16/1 in the BoyleXtra Rewards In Shop Maiden Hurdle over the extended two miles.

The eight-year-old gelding stayed on well along the run-in for Philip Donovan to collar Master Splinter in the final strides for trainer Cormac Farrell.

“He has (come home to good effect), we kind of expected him to win but didn’t think we would have to go about it that way!” Donovan said.

“I’m very pleased with him and I’m delighted for the owner, Patrick Hayes, who is a good friend of mine. Delighted to get one up for him.

“The first-time tongue-tie and good ground was a big help.”

John McConnell and Ben Harvey also teamed up for a winner on the card through Reserve Judgement in the BoyleSports Time To Switch Handicap Hurdle.

The 5/1 shot moved clear two out and, although pressed by the favourite Walking The Walk after the last, had more in the tank as he went on by two and a half lengths.

McConnell said: “He’s slow but he keeps galloping! He likes that ground and won his point-to-point on quick ground.

“To be honest, it is kind of a reward for perseverance by the owner (Derek Kierans). He was giving us a lot of worry for a long time, but he probably only got his conditions today.

“We might travel and he’ll jump a fence as well.”
