COUNTESS Of Tyrone marked herself out as a filly with a bright future after landing the Listed His Majesty’s Plate at Down Royal on Friday evening.

This was just the daughter of Australia’s fourth start and she was up in trip to two miles after posting a runner-up finish over one mile, six furlongs in listed company at Gowran Park.

Billy Lee, riding his second winner on the card, had her tracking the pace throughout and she made headway to lead two and a half furlongs down.

Esquiline came with her challenge inside the final furlong, however, Countess Of Tyrone saw it out best by a neck at 7/2 for owner Robert J W Moran.

Trainer Paddy Twomey said: “She handled it (step up in trip) well there today and I thought this race might suit her a couple of weeks ago. I’m delighted the way she did it.

“Her brother (Earl Of Tyrone) was good and she’s a nice filly. It is great to win a stakes race with her and, hopefully, she can continue in these stakes races.”

Lee double

Lee was also seen to winning effect aboard Talia for Natalia Lupini in the BoyleSports Money Back If 2nd To SP Fav Handicap.

Talia’s finishing kick saw the 10/3 favourite home by a neck for owner Angelo Matta after a plethora of horses held chances at the business end.

Lupini said: “Seven furlongs is ideally her trip. She finds and she is honest and a genuine filly.

“We really fancied her today over this trip on that mark, so hopefully there is more improvement. We will maybe take a couple of weeks easy with her and go again.”

Andrew Oliver’s Loma Larnee was suspended for 60 days for refusing to race for the second time in a row.

GORDON Elliott’s Samui, a 126-rated hurdler, made a winning debut on the flat in the BoyleSports Lengthen The Odds Maiden over 10 furlongs.

He was far from swiftly into stride, but soon tracked and came through to dispute the lead a quarter of a mile from home.

The 7/4 favourite took over approaching the final furlong and asserted in the closing stages to come in by three and a quarter lengths.

Jockey Declan McDonogh, sporting Allan Snow’s colours, said: “He wouldn’t go in and he wouldn’t come out!

“We didn’t go quick in the first quarter and I was able to just get to the outside and mosey up in my own time without using any horse. He stays and he actually won well at the line.”

She’s Smart sprang a 14/1 surprise for owner Jim Fairhurst in the BoyleSports Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap over the flying five furlongs.

Adam Caffrey bided his time and improved her into second a furlong out. She soon took over and kept on well to take the honours by a length and a quarter.

Trainer Ado McGuinness said: “The handicapper gave her a chance, he dropped her 7lb I think from her last run.

“She did show a good attitude and Adam gave her a good ride - they went very hard and he took his time with her and let her take her chance to come home. She came home well.”

There was another shock in the BoyleSports Acca Rewards Fillies Maiden when Miss Meagher showed improvement on her second start to deliver at 18/1.

Powered clear

Luke McAteer sent her about her business racing to the final furlong and the Galileo Gold filly powered home by two and a-half lengths for owner Miss Eileen Ryan.

“It just didn’t happen the first day in Gowran (eighth), probably just a little bit green,” said trainer Barry Fitzgerald.

“We rectified things when we went home and Rory that rides her out did a good job on her at home, and got her where she is today.

“She showed plenty at home before the first day as well, so I was expecting a big step forward (today). She’s a good filly.”

CORNAHILT Soldier was a morning-price mover ahead of the BoyleSports Extra Places Every Day Handicap and the money proved to be shrewd.

Once she grabbed the lead outside the furlong pole, the race was over as she quickened away by six lengths in the hands of Wesley Joyce.

From as big as 18/1 in the morning, she went off at 11/2 and scored for owner Peter Durnin.

Trainer Kevin Smith said: “I fancied her last night (10th at Fairyhouse) and she didn’t get much luck in-running. I was disappointed coming home last night.

“I was confident in her today, she ate up and there wasn’t a bother on her. She had a spring in her step this morning,” he added.

Leinster was the subject of plenty of support for the BoyleXtra Rewards In Shop Maiden and the 5/4 favourite responded in good style with a clear-cut success.

Sweeping home

Joseph O’Brien’s colt grabbed the lead a quarter of a mile out and, despite wandering inside the final furlong, wasn’t unduly troubled in sweeping home by three and a quarter lengths for Al Shira’aa Farms.

Jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle said: “We went along lovely and he travelled around sweet for me. He would have learned a lot today.

“I knew I had plenty of horse left and I didn’t want to break his momentum. I was there plenty soon and he did roll around when I got to the front, but he got to the line well.”
