“LISTED only in name, really” was the quote from winning jockey Declan McDonogh after Lady With The Lamp stormed home at 66/1 in a red-hot renewal of the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Legacy Stakes over five furlongs.
Joseph O’Brien’s filly really found her stride once switched out and rolled home in the final furlong to get up by a head close home.
McDonogh said: “A really strong pace and I couldn’t go early. I was out wide and I was going to get hung out on the turn for a stride, so I came in and sat for a furlong. Then as soon as she straightened up, she had loads left.
“She came home well the last day, but she has got a very willing attitude. I’d imagine she could go on from that.”
The winner scored in the colours of Kevin Blake, Emma Palmer, Michael Wilson and Nick Luck.
There was another listed race on the card in the shape of the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Star Appeal Stakes over seven furlongs.
Right makes it two
Aidan O’Brien supplied 10/11 favourite Bernard Shaw and 13/2 shot Right And True, and it was the latter who doubled his career total for Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Sue Magnier.
The Arizona colt led from the gates, but was headed after a couple of furlongs by his stablemate. Ronan Whelan sent him on with less than a quarter of a mile to travel and his mount found generously to win by a length and a quarter from Comanche Brave (5/1) with Bernard Shaw the same distance back in third.
Stable representative Chris Armstrong said: “We’ll see how he comes out of the race, he’s going to be a lovely horse for next year. He could maybe start off in a Guineas Trial.
“If he comes through it (this race) well, he could put himself in the mix for the Breeders’ Cup. We’ll see where he fits in with the rest of the team.”
Gavin Ryan, who was on board Comanche Brave, picked up a four-day suspension over a careless riding incident.
BLACK Storm progressed from a runner-up berth in Cork to win the Michael Cooney Memorial Maiden for the Roving Swan Partnership.
The 85/40 favourite soon tracked the leaders and was third at halfway. Seamie Heffernan drove him to the front 150 yards down and the duo kept on best to score by a length.
Trainer Kevin Coleman said: “I got him off Ken Condon who had all the work done with him.
“He ran in a barrier trial and we got him after that. He improved from the barrier trial and he improved from the run in Cork.
“I was a bit worried coming back to seven (furlongs) on a quicker surface, but that was the only option because he needs good ground.”
Top-weight Hero Of The Hour put in a professional performance for trainer Tom McCourt and owner David Hoey in the William Hill Committed To Top Prices Handicap.
The 11/4 favourite raced in mid-division and travelled well into contention two furlongs out. He then took over approaching the final furlong and ran on well to land the spoils by two and a half lengths.
Jockey James Ryan said: “In fairness, he got plenty of runs on the grass during the year and it sparked him up.
“On his last run he just didn’t handle Fairyhouse - we thought he would run well, but he just didn’t handle the undulations.
“Lisa in the yard was riding him out during the week and he was carting her around the place, so we thought he would run well.”
VALIANT Force, who holds a rating of 101, made a successful transition to Polytrack in the William Hill Proper Betting Race over five furlongs.
David Egan came over from Britain for the ride on the colt who picked up the lead a furlong and a half out. He soon had Harry’s Bar on his tail and showed his resolution in seeing that rival off by three-parts of a length at 11/4 for Amo Racing Limited, Mrs Rachael O’Callaghan and Giselle de Aguiar.
Trainer Adrian Murray said: “It was a hot race and a grand confidence booster for him as well.
“He’ll probably come back for the (Group 3) Mercury Stakes here this month.
“David said he gave him a good feel and he said he travelled really well all the way. He said he was very comfortable everywhere.”
Breakthrough
Midnight Stagger made the breakthrough for Jack Davison in the William Hill More Top Prices Nursery.
The Galileo Gold juvenile improved to dispute the lead with Senior Montecristo over a furlong out and got the better of that rival 100 yards from home. The 4/1 favourite kept on best under Wesley Joyce to beat a staying-on Admirador by half a length.
“He’s just a bit late maturing really. I’d say we will go again up here,” owner/trainer Davison said.
“He’s still having a good look there when he hit the front - he’s never been up here, to be fair, and the lights are all new to a horse.”
Another success
Tough Talk followed up on his Laytown victory last month with another success in the William Hill Top Price Guarantee Handicap.
The Moyglare Stud Farm four-year-old made all for Colin Keane and, although he was there to be shot at, kept finding to score by a length.
Ger Lyons said of the 11/8 favourite: “He leads all our work at home and he is very, very straightforward at home.
“That was lovely and he is a fine horse - he’s a gorgeous horse, but he’s off to the sales and we’ve had our time with him.”
